Sargon III (10mn/move) vs Prédateur (5mn/move)

Post by JuLieN » Sat Oct 08, 2011 11:27 pm

After Fern's suggestion in this thread of running my engine against the Amiga version of Sargon III emulated inside WinUAE using a just in time compiler, I decided it could be a fun experiment.

As Prédateur is not a very strong engine, to say the least, and considering that Sargon III runs inside a just in time compiler, and hence retains most of the host CPU's speed, I decided to give Sargon III 10mn per move + ponder, and 5 mn to Prédateur without ponder. Hopefully the game will be interesting :) The game runs on my iMac (i5 CPU).

After 5 moves, Sargon III is out of book and just started to think :

Sargon played 6. c2-C4, after actually thinking for half an hour, and Prédateur, now out of book too, answered with d7-d6, after only one minute of thinking...

(If some Amigan here doesn't recognize Sargon's usual colors, it's because I'm running it inside a Workbench 3.1 OS.)

Sargon played Nc3 after another half hour, expecting Nc6 from Pred, but Prédateur, after a short 53s long pondering, went for Qb6 after disliking the line Nc6,Qb3,Qb6,Qxb6,axb6.

Sargon plays Qb3, expecting Qxb3,axb3,Nc6,Bg5,h6,Bd2,... with a 0.0 score.

Prédateur played the expected move, with the following PV: 8...Dxb3 9.axb3 Cc6 10.Fd2 Fd7 11.e4 Cb4 12.e5 Cg4 13.exd6 exd6 14.Ch4 Cxd3 15.Fxb7 Fxc3 ( 0.0 score too).

The pace of the game seems to be stable at 30mn for Sargon III (despite the 10mn/move setting) and a little bit less than 1mn for Prédateur (despite the 5mn/move setting...).

Sargon played a bit faster, as the move was forced: axb3 (-0.24), and Prédateur answered with the non less expected Nc6 ( 9...Cc6 10.h3 Fe6 11.Fe3 a6 12.Cg5 Fd7 13.Tad1 h6 14.Cge4 Ca5 15.Cxf6+ exf6 16.g4 Cxb3; 0.0).

It's only the tenth move, and yet both sides castled and the queens were exchanged... It will be a looooong game, where Sargon's superior ending knowledge might end up doing the difference.

After having considered playing Bg5 up to the very last minute, Sargon decided for Bd2 (0.0) . To which Prédateur answered with Bd7 (10...Fd7 11.Ta3 Tac8 12.e4 Cg4 13.h3 Cf6 14.Taa1 h6 15.Fe3 a6 16.Tad1; 0.0 ).

Interestingly, the engines are so different that they rarely predict their opponent's answer... Sargon is starting to feel confident, and I must say the position looks good for white... And Prédateur is totally ignorant of what's happening in the center...
