More about Comet B68

Post by fern » Sat Aug 06, 2011 6:41 pm

I believe this version was the last one of the engine. A pity, because, given his virtues, we can easily imagine that a 2011 Comet would be a very interesting and strong machine, in the league of the 10 best at the very least.
As you all know, such is the number of current engines above 2400 Elo mark that it is almost imposible to get a good idea of all of them and what in fact happens is this: we get stuck with two or three for a good while, then we concentrate our time with another set of two or three and so and so and in the meantime new engines appears...
It is not very different to what happens to a compulsive reader as I am. No matter how much I read, books piles in faster number in my library than the number I can finish..
I wonder why Ulrich left the field. Probably a matter of jobs or/and studies. I say this because Comet was and still is a VERY interesting engine due to the way it generates moves. When not looking at a forcing line, which every engine see and follow the same, Comet find original moves, or, at least, different moves to what I expect from other engines. In fact, we have reached a phase in which many engines plays almost the same moves. To see an engine behaving otherwise is a joy.
That is...I hope my words will awaken the interest of others here to play Comet. A very pleasant thing to do along a weekend.

I do play Comet Fern and even nowadays I still include it in my running tournaments....

BTW,it's worth to say that it has a great learning function which actually works with more games played by the engine.
Cheers,

Wish I had Fern....I've played 4 games against it ,2 draws,very hard gained btw,and 2 loses....

It's damn tactical and as you pointed out,it makes super unexpected moves just to complicate the position as it knows that it's playing a pathetic human being

But,this very style of playing backfires a lot when Comet plays against other chess engines....

I have it installed both in Fritz Gui and in Sh Gui. Which of them you consider best to play this engine?

Coincidentally, in 6 of my recent tournaments a version of Comet has played, including Comet B68 in one of them. FWIW, in 40sso avg elo 2202 (a swiss system tournament), Comet B68 scored +3, -5, =0. Additionally, Comet B00 in the same tournament scored +4, -4, =0. In 45sso (avg elo 2150), Comet B01 scored +3, -2, =2. In 49sso, avg elo 1694 Comet B50 scored +7, -1, =0. In 61c, a double RR with avg elo of 2272, Comet B48 scored +7, -5, =6, and finally in 062c, also a double RR with an avg elo of 2023 Comet B10 scored +9, -5, =4. The elo ratings given are obviously of no use except to indicate that 49sso, for instance, was a rather weak tournament, while 61c was, on average, the strongest of the given tournaments. If you would like further details, e.g. opponents and results vs each opponent, let me know.

The Shrdder GUI would be fine as you can install it directly as a winboard engine....
