Houdini 1.5: one mystery/question

Post by Jouni » Tue Dec 21, 2010 9:35 am

After years of hard work why didn't Robert make it commercial? Think of it: 65 euro from every download - should be nice sum of money now!?!?

Yep, it surely is an interesting consideration.
Would you pay 65 euro for it?

Would I pay €65 for the best engine?

Yes, of course.

My reply is not now after I got it for free but I may decide to pay 65 Euro for something that is at least 65 elo stronger than the best free program.

i've personally always wondered why those bastards richard vida, don dailey, tord romstad & the rest of the stockfish team aren't charging me money for their product when i'm paying for the likes of shredder, hiarcs, & junior which are weaker. absolutely preposterous & may they rot in hell forever.

The real money to be made is in the mobile platform, if Houdini was sold as a iphone app and still maintained it's relative strength I guess that he would sell 10's of thousands in a short time.Remember that being number 1 is the key to selling the most.Even Tord that has the Stockfish port on iphone is still getting 1000 new downloads each week, but it is free so probably makes things different. But I have heard of other developers for other games make a small fortune from selling at a low price but have high volume.
For some weird reason Vas has not made a mobile version of Rybka in all the years that it was # 1 and I feel that he may have missed the boat now.
Imagine the telescopes you could build with the extra money
I personally don't like the iphone experience for chess related abilities, so would much rather the windows mobile or android platform.

With Shredder, you also get a decent GUI, at least.

And yeah, why are people paying for MS Office when they can also use OpenOffice? I guess it has to do with marketing channels that are more comfortable to the users who just don't want to dig into the channels that are unique to the internet, e.g. downloading large files, compiling stuff on their own etc.

The same would be true for many other chess programmers and for me, too.
