A Chess variant with low draw rate

Post by Laskos » Fri Jan 19, 2018 5:20 pm

I almost randomly built a Chess variant following exactly the normal rules of Chess, having the same Chess pieces, only the opening position is different:

[D]3rqknr/4bpp1/4bpp1/1PP1npp1/1PPN1pp1/1PPB4/1PPB4/RNKQR3 w - -

I have built a small 3-mover book (about 500 positions) for this Chess variant. This Chess variant is accepted by the vast majority of engines. I took the top 5 engines to check for its properties. Maybe someone (a human) has a strategy to win in this games, and he can beat a top engine if he tries to apply it. I couldn't do that, as there is very much tactics involved, and I always lose, although maybe my strategy is not that bad.

Summary of general properties:
  • Draw rate is low (5-10%) and doesn't increase with time control.
There is no rating compression with time control.
At LTC, Stockfish becomes weaker than even Andscacs. The top engine at this variant is Houdini, followed by Komodo.
White advantage is small and pretty constant with TC.
The game seems to be very tactical, but the regular engines seem to miss some strategy features.

It seems the quality of the book I have built is pretty low, I may build a better book sometime.

Thanks! Seems pretty unhuman to play, but maybe some will be interested. Also, maybe the theoretical outcome of this game is not that clear even for engines "trained" for it.
Here is an improved 3-mover EPD opening book, containing only fairly balanced positions analysed by Houdini 6.03 for 30 seconds each. Only 216 unique positions in this improved book.

What do you mean with opening position (in the image)

The games listed in your post have other and different starting positions.

Yes, this is the starting position of this variant. The positions listed are pretty balanced positions reached after 3 moves, for diversity (an EPD 3-mover opening book) for this variant which I posted initially. This diversity helps in testing in games, for example, otherwise playing always from the same standard position, there will be many almost repeated games and skewed results.

Well done! I'll always support a variant backward-compatible with chess :)

Maybe you can contact the lichess guys so they implement it on the server and people can play it (it's just a starting FEN, so it should be easy for them.)

These don't even qualify as variants. They are just Chess for a different starting positio. ('thematic tournaments', if you like.) I guess you could call them 'sub-variants'.

Thanks! Seems pretty unhuman to play, but maybe some will be interested.
My son and I played several games yesterday. I have almost no experience with 960 but so far I like this setup better than 960 positions I've tried.

I haven't looked at your opening book but my son and I quickly gravitated to 1. Rh1 Rxh1 2. Qxh1 f3. I just plugged that into Stockfish and it wants to continue 3. Be1 f4 4. Nd2 ...

For me it's a lot of fun because the pawns are so much more valuable and pieces (esp. bishops) so much less valuable than in FIDE chess.

960 is considered a variant, isn't it? It seems this is along the same lines.

Anyway, I think it deserves a name. Laskos chess?

It changes fundamentallythe rules for castling, and requires specific FEN notation to specify in some positions with what rook the king can castle.

It is a variant because no chess engines are able to play them (they'd be surprised when the opponent castles), and no GUI is able to support them until a developer adds extra code to the GUI. And apparently such code is hard to maintain, so developers might just decide to drop 960 from their engines because it's easier than chasing bugs that may appear.

This is a reason for which "variants" are inferior to "thematic tournaments", or the category Laskos chess would fall into.

Anybody, right now, can set up tournaments on the GUI of their choice to play Laskos chess and see how any chess engine performs from these positions, and people at home can set the positions up and play with their loved ones without having to explain extra rules (unlike 960.)

You know chess? You can play it, not being a variant is a plus.
