On my system Deep Rybka 3 64-bit likes Qh3 and stays with it after some 3+ minutes of thought. If Rc3 it played, then Rybka still does not see the drawing line you provide. Your 4. ... Qxc1?? is weak to 4. ... Rxb2!! See key position here:

[d]1r4k1/p4ppp/2BP4/4P2P/3b1P2/2P5/pB6/K1Q2q2 b - - 0 4

Not 4. ... Qxc1?? Winning is 4. ... Rxb2!!
You are right indeed Ted, Rxb2 avoids the losing trap. So 1...Rc3! is winning after all. Gee, clarity after 10+ years

And about 4...Qxc1: After 5.Bxc1 Rb1+ Rybka 2.3 (4-proc) after 27 plies and 10 minutes finally find a positive score. Not that mine does better :!:

= (0.00) Depth: 26 00:01:21 19615kN
6.Kxa2 Rxc1 7.cxd4 Kf8 8.d5 Re1 9.Kb2 a5 10.Kb3 Re4 11.Kc3 Re2 12.Kd3 Rb2
+- (1.74) Depth: 27 00:10:10 161963kN

Hi Ed,

I downloaded the anotated version of this game from your Rebel website. The notes are still interesting 10+ years later. I will tell you one thing, 34. ... R3b4 (R3b6 is what Rybka displays) May be the best move, but the human in me likes that 34. ... Rc3! move for sure. It is so astecially pleasing to my eyes. Do you remember who was the 1st one to spot it?

512 ram is what I have my chess programs set up to use.
The machine itself has 8 gb of DDR3 ram

Even the older (Passive) Thinker 5.2B finds R3b4 immediately... :)

This is a sub-variation of the game Anand - Rebel 10 (1998). I wonder if any of the nowadays top programs can avoid 1..Rc3 which eventually leads to a draw.

1.. Rc3 2. bxc3 Qc4 3. Bb2 Qxf1+ 4. Qc1 Qxc1+ 5. Bxc1 Rb1+ 6. Kxa2 Rxc1 7. cxd4 Rxc6 8. d7 draw

Or somewhat easier, let your engine return a 0.00 score with 2.bxc3.

BTW, the winning move is 1..R3b4 but that's off-topic for now

Honored Mr.Shroder, dear Ed!

I must take the chance to thank you for your great work.
Pro Deo 1.6 still is one of my favorite engines, especially the Q3 tactical engine solves tricky problems faster than most any other modern program, commercial of free.
If I may ask: is there a chance Pro Deo will go MP?
Thanks a lot again
Peter.

Hi Peter,

I haven't touched the thing for nearly 2 years now and it's unlikely that will change. There is a whole new generation of programmers and they are much more qualified for the job, the circle of life (even in CC) is something nobody escapes from and should be respected. As you can see I like drama

Ed

Hi Ed!
It's a pity you stopped working on it but we don't have to begrudge this to you.
Cause I like drama too, I really want to thank you again for giving so much of the music to us, that was given to you
:)
Peter.
