Does your engine blunder here?

Sicilian variation:

[/pgn]

Best move is 16. .. h5 here. I noticed many engines tend to play 16. .. b4, which can be considered a blunder because of 17.Nd5! many top engines too! :)

What move your engine would play here?

Of course there are many games with 16.Rg1. It's the standard Scid ECO B99y variation! :)

The fact is, most engines are stronger than the top human GMs now, and they could be used to build/tune opening books. But in some cases their task isn't so easy.

The question was: how much deep must they go to see 16. ..b4 is wrong? Stockfish finds 16. ..h5 rather quickly:

But if we give it the "blunder" and we continue some plies with the best moves from both sides, it thinks it's even.

Most top engines think 17.a3 is a better move. Cerebellum book agrees. :)

In some games here, AsmFish plays 17.Qe2, with the idea to sac the e4 pawn. Ex; 17.Qe2 Nd7 18.e5 Nxe5.

Then, it concentrates against e6-f7 black pawn structure. I find it interesting too.

Hi Rodolfo!

That's really not easy to be answered, on Herbert Bellmann's corr.2017- CD the position was reached in 628 games.

Of those 16...h5 was played 426 times with that performance:
185W=43,4% 165R=38,8% 76B=17,8%.

...b4 was played 139 times with this performance:
67W=48,2% 57R=41% 15B=10,8%

As for engines' evals they tend to be a little higher for White's side after 16...b4 17.Nd5 than after 16...h5 and e.g. 17.Kb1 or 17.a3 but for both moves evals stay within range of = to +/= after a little Forward- Backward of a few moves only.

Who wants to make a thematic tournament with long TC and significant amount of games for the to be expected drawing- ratio?

As for my personal pov 16...h5 has the edge, but who cares for my personal pov except me?
:)

Hi Peter,

I just think performances aren't so relevant. 16. ..h5 is playable, and 16. ..b4 is a bad move. An engine tournament isn't necessary. Just some analyses, possibly with the help of an engine with persistent hashes. A pity no top engine has PH option, which would be extremely useful here.

I spent a lot of time on this opening variation, but Critter was the best engine with PH option, so it was not so easy to analyze it carefully.

I agree ...h5 is better, but the question of "playabiltiy" of ...b4 compared to it isn't so easy to be answered yet and that's a question of performance only of course, because Black can lose with ...h5 as well as you see in the not so little number of games in corr.- database, even from recent years only too.
You'd have to prove ...b4 to lose for sure and ...h5 to hold the draw for sure not to have performance (of a certain high level of full games) as the only possible answer if one move is much better playable than the other.

And the most difficult question is, how exactly to use the position as a test position for engines.

Again I agree with you that good or bad llines in output after Forward- Backward of really good test- lines should do it, but that's not the way output- lines are seen normally (which might be a pity too, but again, my personal pov isnt' normal here neither :))

BTW persistent hash is a feature of asmFish, komodo and Shredder13 too

Well' I think your viewpoint is important. At least, it's important for me. :)

I'll post some analyses later (no time to do it now...) about b4 is an absolutely losing move. But I can't say about h5. W is a bit better, and there's no winning line. One has only to wait for opponent blunder...

About PHs, I have no shredder, but I can say Asmfish has only the option to save/load them. If you produce a move, a hash reset happens. Komodo hashes aren't persistent at all. Try to make some moves, then take them back and try a second variation. Then go back to the first variations and you'll find Komodo didn't retain the scores. It happened, newest entries overwrote oldest ones.

A PH is a separate, additional hash. If not, it can't persist. :)

See later!

Best move is 16. .. h5 here. I noticed many engines tend to play 16. .. b4, which can be considered a blunder because of 17.Nd5! many top engines too! :)

What move your engine would play here?

Rodolfo
Both Stockfish and SF-McB switched to h5 almost at the same time and depth. SF was a little quicker to make the change to h5.
