MadChess 2.2 Released

I've released version 2.2 of my chess engine. Details available on the MadChess 2.2 Released page on my website.

I'm fairly confident MadChess has crossed the 2500 ELO barrier. So now I can rightfully claim MadChess plays Grandmaster quality chess.

I believe this makes MadChess the strongest mailbox-board-representation chess engine written in a managed programming language. Stronger chess engines have been written in managed languages, but they use bitboards. Of course this begs the question, should I rewrite MadChess using bitboards and C++? I'll think that over, though as I mention in the blog post, .NET Native and Core RT look interesting.

I installed the 32-bit executable in Arena 3.0 on my windows-7 machine. When I tried to run an engine-match I got this message:

MadChess.engine.exe - System Error
The program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Any suggestion?

Thanks Steve! I'm not so certain. In fact, MadChess has difficulty against your engine. It's very close in ELO rating but under-performs one on one. You know how that is- some engines are "owned" by others, ha ha.

Are you running the .exe in a directory with all the associated .dll files? I'll check it out later tonight.

I installed in Arena by the following path:

C:\chess\MadChess\MadChess-Win32-2-2\MadChess

This directory has the executable and many dlls, but not the missing one.

MadChess 2.2 win32 causes no problems and runs normally,
but the 64-bit edition refuses to execute any noves:
