Virtual Chess II

Post by Colin-G »

Does anyone remember this chess program?

Imageuploading images
It was bundled with my first PC that I bought in 1998.
The box said it was the Professional World Microcomputer Chess Champion of 1997.
further infomation is here https://www.game-ai-forum.org/icga-tour ... .php?id=13
This seems to be the last chess engine from the 2 French programmers.
I still use it occassionally in engine-engine matches. The moves have to be made manually since it cannot import an opponent engine.
It works ok in WinXP and in linux using wine.
In my ELO ratings it is of similar strength to GreKo 12.1, Tao 5.6, Green Light 3.0 and LambChop 10.99

Yes! I also had it! Do you have games (against other chess engines) you could make public?

The ChessProgramming wiki doesn't seem to have all the info. According to Weill's PhD thesis (written in French), there were 4 programs that eventually lead to Virtual Chess namely, Echec, Cumulus, Ecume and finally Joker.

Weill also later worked on the Frenchess chess engine (running on a Cray T3D with 128 processors).

Nonetheless, thanks for the memories!

Of course I do. I used to have it in it's CD case. I ordered online somewhere but I can't remember though. This was probably 20+ years ago. I lost it over the years though.

These are 6 games played by Virtual Chess in the last few years.
I chose them due to the fact that in each game Virtual Chess managed to beat a much higher rated engine.

Two Games I found in my database when I used to play actively against the chess engines....

I hope soon to get back to this beautiful practice again...
Cheers,
