A very subtle fortress destruction

Post by Arpad Rusz »

In this endgame study by Vladislav Tarasiuk (Problemist of Ukraine, 2014) white has to very carefully choose between 1.d6 and 1.g6. One of the moves will lead to an indestructible fortress, the other one is winning. Guess, which move is played by the engines?

Very well, Arpad!
Yet komodo with full Syzygys realizes its error being shown the right move with soon climbing evals, whereas there is no progress with the wrong one chosen first.
At least teachable.

The latest Stockfish (without endgame tables) switched to g6 very early in the search. It seems to be converging to a win, albeit after a long search ...

Crafty switches from d6 to g6 at depth=25, at the 4 second mark. Score jumps from about +1.75, to +5.0 at that point:

Sorry, this was botched. terminating backslash-code was missing. Actually it was botched in many ways. I was running hash tests yesterday and had set .craftyrc hash size, path hash size, etc to tiny values, and forgot about it. It reaches depth=36 in 3 minutes. Not going to post again with more analysis.

I've been wondering the same thing. I've let Crafty search on both moves independently, and by the time the depth gets on up there, it looks like the two produce equal scores. I wonder if d6 really does end up in a draw, or if this is yet another error in endgame studies. Fine certainly had enough exposed over the years, both before and after EGTBs were available.
