Cheng: A great lost to the community

Post by Frank Quisinsky »

Hi there,

since a while I am testing Cheng in FCT1. At the moment engine have a Wildcard for FCT1 because I haven't a big interest in testing engines the programmer stopped the development. This is really a great lost to all of us.

The style of Cheng is really particulary if I compare stats with the others. Cheng have more as only one face ... if I am looking to the main Topic "Playing style". Often I can see here wonderful combination not to see for the others.

Very nice work the programmer do here. I think one of our orders is to animated the Czech programmer Martin Sedlak. Never a development should be ended for such great engines Cheng is.

If the programmer continue the development I am sure it can be one of the best news for 2015 if I am looking on potential for improvements. In endgames the programmer can do a lot, engine need 1-2 ply`s more ... a faster search, perhaps more tuning.

My first wish for the year 2015 ...
Development of Cheng must be restarted DIRECTLY ... this is an order!

Best
Frank

What can I do with your message if I like it to sleep peacefully!?
Could be a problem for me because I know nothing.

Normaly I am a men I have a lot of secret information.
That is good for a heafenly peace ... and a blissful sleep.

Hm ...
We need every talented programmer in fighting against "Clones".

Or other hobby "Computer chess" dies carefully in perspective to originality / innovativiness!

Hi Frank,

i guess a lot of programmers are active in the background ;-). Think of Fabien who released an engine 10 years after his fantastic Fruit release.

It is not easy for many of them to take the time because of business, family, friends and maybe some other private interests.
And having a break, like me after the release of Nemo, also does not mean the development has stopped.

So, my goals before continuing with very very restricted time available, have been to improve code quality, finding a smp solution and some kind of tuning algorithm which at least avoids random guessing for introduced values.

As you can see, there is a lot to do behind the scenes before going into production. The rewrite of Nemo did already start because each of the mentioned points have been solved for a certain degree.

The project name is "Nemo 2015", self explaining ;-). Only one condition
may avoid the release, it must be at least as strong as Nemo 1.0.1 for the release version.

So, programmes who are really working on their engine need time. And people waiting for original engines, need patience ;-).

Best regards,
Michael

Hi Martin,

OK, that is the first bombshell news for 2015.
All is good, computer chess can be wonderful.

I know that the programmers have also other interest as computer chess only but please never you should gave up with your engine. It's too interesting what you do here.

With other words ...
You gave us Cheng and now your are a prisoner for the community. Other programmers have the same problem and I have the problem I have to test it.

Thanks again ...
GOOD NEWS !!

Best
Frank

Will be test after my still running FCT1-2015 tourney in around 3 weeks.
