ChessBase annoyances

Post by jdart »

I am still on ChessBase 10, not having upgraded the program for a while, although I have the more recent databases.

I use it a lot and like it a lot, but there are a few bugs that annoy me quite a bit. I am wondering if anyone else has seen these and if they are fixed in more recent versions.

1. Pasting large number of games from a PGN file into a PGN file does
not work, it just brings up an error dialog that says "Canceled" and
doesn't do the paste (paste from a CB database does work even with
large quantities of games).

2. Pasting games into a PGN file can corrupt the file: the games are
inserted somewhere in the middle, not the end, and often in the middle
of an existing game. Doesn't happen all the time but only sometimes.

3. Sometimes a search in the Reference pane just hangs.

4. "Sticky" position search. Do a search for a given board
position. Now go back into the search dialog. Unclick the "position"
checkbox. Now change something else, like the year range. The position
checkbox is checked again! You have to go into the Position pane
and clear the board to make it go away for good. (I guess this might be a feature but I find it inconvenient).

I am still trying to figure out how to create a pgn database in Fritz 12. It simply is impossible to do, and the interface happily creates a cbh file instead. That is why I create the pgn database in some other GUI, and then use it in Fritz.

There is a whole bunch of German guys, one of whose favourite passtimes is criticising Chessbase. Among others, here should belong Ingo Bauer and Kurt Utzinger. They might be extremely helpful here :D

I think CB is simply the best, also in terms of bugs.

Chessbase 10 I never liked, even so you have to be updated, I think I get to the service pack 6.

Chessbase 11 was a great improvement.

Chessbase 12 is almost perfect, apart from having a 64-bit version, wonderful.

In Fritz 12 simply display the type, see the option PGN
