If this link works, you can read a part of Hsu's book "Behind Deep Blue" about the trip to Denmark in 1993. At page 138 after the headline "Day 1 (Wednesday, 24 February) Hsu starts the chapter with "This was a disastrous day"
Deep Blue had lost the first game against Bent Larsen. That is well known.
But there were also played some rapid games.
Such two games were also played that day, and Deep Blue lost them both.
And in a terrible way.
Despite that rapid chess should be in favour of the computer.
The game against Bjarke Kristensen, black.

Bjarke now played a very fine attack and won.

After the games I entered the room where Deep Blue and the Deep Blue team was.
It was with mixed emotions.
I had made a lot of material for preparing the danish players.
See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZ2noNtG ... NQ&index=5
So I wanted the danish players to do well.
But I was also a programmer and a computerchess-freak.
So I also wanted Deep Blue to do well.
The mood was not good as I entered the room.
Hsu looked at me and said "It's all because of you, you, you"
I said, well, I expected Deep Blue would score better the following days.
Actually I did not know how much the danish players had studied my material.
And I hoped Deep Blue would do better.
If Deep Blue failed like that, the whole event would be a failure.
Luckily it turned out to be a quite even event.
Something was wrong with Deep Blue that day, and the following night Joe Hoane succeded to fix it.
Hsu ends the chapter: "The results, looking back today, are no longer important, but the match experience and the chess lessons we obtained from the trip were invaluable".
After this event the Deep Blue team got connected with a strong chessplayer.

Re: 24 February 1993 - a disastrous day for Deep Blue
A few days later another game of rapid chess was played.
Svend Hamann played black and got a bad position.
Position after 37.-,Nc1
[d]5R2/r5pp/3N2k1/3Ppp2/2P5/p7/P5PP/2n3K1 w - - 2 38
But in the next few moves Deep Blue first lost its advantage, and then got a lost position.
Analysis after the games showed, that Deep Blue only needed a few seconds more to avoid the bad moves.
This is a good example of the horizon-effect.
