New version: Popeye 4.59 (28th December 2011).

Post by Ajedrecista »

Hello!

I was taking a quick look in Chess2U forum and I found this info:

http://www.chess2u.com/t5136-popeye-updated#29618

http://sourceforge.net/projects/popeye- ... peye/4.59/

Reading the README.txt file, it looks like the author/s has/have improved a lot the speed of solving for some cases, and also has/have fixed some bugs that were in version 4.55 (the predecessor of 4.59). More versions are here.

It looks like Popeye is developped by many people:

I have read great things about Popeye, but I have never tried it... it is time to do now.

Regards from Spain.

Well, those 'great things' about Popeye are only about fairy chess problems (maybe also self-/help-mates). If you're just interested in usual orthodox mate problems then you'll be quite disappointed about Popeye - it's VERY slow for such problems.

Regards,
Franz

PS. If you need a good GUI for Popeye you can try Fancy 2.9, a freeware shell:
http://free.of.pl/c/ccintorun/g/fancy.htm

Of course also PopyeUCI from my own site is another possibility, but since it's designed for UCI-GUIs (especially Arena) the handling of fairy pieces is rather complicated.
