interesting position from Rybka v Houdini

     In the 77th game of the match in the tournament forum this position arose after move 39...
 
[D] 5r1k/6p1/8/2Pp1rq1/4pbPp/1P2Q2P/2N1PPK1/5RR1 w - -
 
     Rybka had spent 10 minutes to play 39. Qe3 and rated the position as equal.  Houdini, though down 2 pawns played 39...Bf4 and gives itself a 2 pawn advantage! Rybka played 40. Qc3 and still calls it even, expecting... 40. Qc3 Be5 41. Qe1 Rf4 42. Kh1 d4 43. Rg2 d3
 
     Over the next few moves Rybka continues to see it as even to slightly in Black's favor, while Houdini continues to insist that it has a 2 pawn (I guess that is winning) advantage.  It is not until move 44 that Rybka sees that it is in trouble.
 
     How do other engings see things starting around move 38, 39, and over the next few moves?  Time was not a factor here as both had made the control at 40 and had plenty of time to think.

Rainbow Serpent does not have the sophisticated eval that Houdini apparently has, but by the sheer computing power of the Athlon supercomputer singular clusternode architecture sponsored on secret budget from the BVD, ASIS and Interpol, our intelligence program can at least spot some trouble for Rybka after a while. But it has to go pretty deep to spy that 8-)

Thanks for the comparison on your i7 Louis, considering the Athlon only reaches 546 kn/s I think the Athlon supercluster is not doing very badly, I read that Lukas Cimiotti is also using an Athlon in his cluster and he also uses just one of them, as some sort of terminal I believe :)

   Critter switches off of 39. Qe3 in favor of Qe1 and gives Black a small edge.  After forcing the game move and 39...Bf4 it does see the problems ahead for White...

I know this thead was already on page three, apologies for bringing it up in the midst of all the good releases of the day, thanks for all the new engines especially a new Spike was unexpected news!

I got a nice deep result for the Rybka vs Houdini matchposition with a Rainbow Serpent that uses Preserve Analysis and deemphasized replacing of hash entries based on generation, as per the code I published in the Rybka forum and the PA version code, that is from Marco Costalba and Martin Wyngaarden mainly.

Rainbow Serpent can now see a certain win which seemed out of reach for the Athlon Supercluster at least, and assuming the consecutive Fail Low at plydepth 38 is not overturned, it might be inaccurate because there is no PV search result yet at this depth.

Extreme search instability or bug with code

Since the code of this is out in the wild I have to warn people it is not ready yet, unfortunately after I posted the search collapsed. I have no idea yet how it happens, whether it is in tt.cpp or in search.cpp I have never seen extreme instability at these depths before, I hope it is something from my last changes, that would be the most likely as this behaviour is new. I wonder if this ever would show up in games in 1 second, sorry I don't want to be too critical but if that is what everyone is doing, I'm not going to. I think it is pretty useless.

Sorry for the bug in the code, I hope I find something
