10 beautiful testpositions!!

Post by George Tsavdaris »

•Play 1.Rc6!! that is the only move that draws.
Very tough for computers i think.
[d]2K3k1/1p6/R3p1p1/1rB1P1P1/8/8/1Pb5/8 w - - 0 1

•Play 1.Re6!! that wins easily!
[d]2bq1b2/1p3k2/1r1p1p1p/pNpP1PpP/P1P3P1/6B1/1P5Q/2K1R3 w - - 0 1

•Play 1.Bg6+!! that wins!
[d]r3r2b/1bpq1k2/2n1pP2/1n1pP1p1/1p1P4/2PB4/PP1QNP1P/R4RK1 w - - 0 1

•Continuation from previous position:
After 1.Bg6+!! Kxg6 2.Qd3+ Kh5 3.Qh3+ Kg6 play:
4.Nf4+! +-
[d]r3r2b/1bpq4/2n1pPk1/1n1pP1p1/1p1P4/2P4Q/PP2NP1P/R4RK1 w - - 0 4

•Continuation from previous position:
And then after 4.Nf4+! gxf4 5.Kh1 Nxe5 6.dxe5 d4+ 7.f3 Bxf3+ 8.Rxf3 Bxf6 9.Rg1+ Bg5 play:
10.Qg2! +-
[d]r3r3/2pq4/4p1k1/1n2P1b1/1p1p1p2/2P2R1Q/PP5P/6RK w - - 0 10

•And a classic one, i guess it will be easy for todays programs:
Play 1.Qf6+!! that wins.
[d]r2q1r2/1b2bpkp/n3p1p1/2ppP1P1/p6R/1PN1BQR1/NPP2P1P/4K3 w - - 0 1

•Only 1.e7!! draws all other moves lose.
OK this is too much for computers. They are standing helpless looking at this problem. :D
[d]6N1/6p1/1B2P3/6r1/6Pk/5ppP/6P1/7K w - - 0 1

•Play 1.Nb5! that wins.
Todays programs should find it easily.
[d]4kbnr/ppq2ppp/1np1p3/6P1/3r3P/2N2Q2/PPPB1P2/2KR1B1R w k - 0 1

•Play 1...Rxh2! with a win.
I guess this is too easy for todays monsters.
[d]r2q3r/2pkb1p1/p2p1n2/4p1p1/Pp2P1P1/1QP5/1P1P2PP/RNB2RK1 b - - 0 1

•White to play and draw!
Impossible for computers of today i guess. :D :D
[d]6b1/ppp1pp1B/2k1p1p1/8/5P2/3PprP1/PPPrPqRP/RnK2nb1 w - -

(I had checked carefully these positions in the past with programs of a different era.
I hope they would not prove incorrect by todays monsters. :D )

YES! He replied.....

The last position is mate in -9, but the question is: What was the last white´s move?.
Best.

The last position to be a draw, with white to move has to be because of the 50 move rule.I can't show that 50 moves have been played with out captures or pawn moves but it is the only explanation.Whites last move would have been Ra1.And black just played Nb1 from some where.

Black's, since it's white to play.

Or Kb1 after a check from Nc3+. :D

For example it could result from this position:
[d]6b1/ppp1pp1B/2k1p1p1/8/5P2/3PprP1/PPPrP1RP/R1Knqnb1 b - -

After ...Qf2 Kb1 Nc3+ Kc1 Nb1
[d]6b1/ppp1pp1B/2k1p1p1/8/5P2/3PprP1/PPPrPqRP/RnK2nb1 w - -

houdini can solve 4 and 5(and I guess it can also solve 3 if I give it enough time).

I used a slow hardware.
I guess it can also solve 2 with enough time but solving 1 is going to be harder for it(still did not look at the other positions).

position number 6 is not easy for houdini and after more than an hour it did not see Qf6+

Maybe houdini has problems in very long time control because of some pruning and maybe not and I did not check at this point of time if houdini can see that white is winning fast after Qf6+
