Test Position: Brilliant endgame shot

Post by Albert Silver »

This position came up in my slow TC Rybka-Robbo match, and at first view it may not seem obvious how white (Robbo) penetrates. Yes, there is an exchange, but black's bishop seems to be able to cover all the right spots. Then comes the zinger ending all doubts. A great shot.

I quess c5 is winning, because the king can enter black position. But I didn't wait until any engine solution - I was faster :)

Yes, really. Realize there may be more than one way to win this position. White does have an exchange after all, but there is a shot that decides the game much quicker.

1.b4 followed by Re3-b3, Kd3 and Rxc3 is quicker.

Stockfish-1.6.2 (8 threads) instantly chooses Kf3 (to be followed later by b4, it seems):

Yes, b4! is the shot.

Brilliant, and quite tough for the engines on average. If it weren't such a slow TC, Robbo probably would never have found it in the game, but it did, and kudos for crowning its win with such a nice shot.
