Hello Jim,

The latest Komodo x64 compile crashed already 4 times in 230 games. Compared to other engines this is quite often.

Winx XP - 64
Classic GUI
256 MB Hash

The whole comp has 4GB memory, and no other engine is crashing.

Just an information in case others are "complaining" as well.

There is a potential buffer overflow issue if the program name is too long when combined with the platform, etc. If you run the program from the command prompt and type "uci" followed by enter, what program name is reported on the various platforms it runs on?

It's not obvious that this is the problem but it's the best theory I have at the moment. I sent an email to Jim Ablett who can tell right away if this is an issue or not. I don't have a windows machine to check this out on.

The engine seems not to know its name

I tried to install it under chessbase and found no komodo engine but only Doch32 1.0 JA(that seems to be an older version relative to Doch32 1.3.4 JA)

I ran it at console mode and we had the "discussion" that you can see at the end of the post.
when the engine claimed in id name Doch32 and not Komodo
so I understand that what I see as Doch32 1.0 JA is practically Komodo
but I think that it is a bug that should be fixed.

I am not sure what the crash is but it seems to not affect play. A window will come out saying there was an exception error.

By the way the program plays very nice positional chess. It is definitely way too slow compared to Rybka 3 or the ippolit series and should be much weaker at blitz time controls, but at longer time controls it should do very well. I like how it manages to squeeze positional pluses without fretting too much about tactics. Very similar to how a human would play, very positional without taking too many risks. If this could be made to run much faster or on bigger hardware (or of course longer time controls) this really could get interesting.

Here is a typical game where it manages to squeeze its opponent with small pluses. I have to say I am impressed and really look forward to seeing this type of program with positional play improve.

Yes this knowledge needs to be added. Rybka 3 has a similar problem where this knowledge (although was there in 2.2n) was missed out in Rybka 3.
