Which makes no difference to chess engines?

dangi12012 wrote: Fri Jun 24, 2022 6:43 pm Also he obviously TROLLS on gpu prices since they are all below MSRP right now because the Crypto market imploded.
Does he know that? Probably. Does he give bad advice on purpouse? Definitely - just ignore that guy - like I try to do (and sometimes I fail).
MSRP for 2 year old GPUs just to run an inferior engine sounds great doesn't it

Maybe you copied your stockfish commits from someone else too?
I will look into that.

You are right, there are many use cases for CPUs in computer chess, but this is the programmers subforum, .....

Oops...I just posted a specific use post. Did I pick the wrong subforum? Should I move...or ask for it to be moved to another?

Hmm, if you ask in the main forum, the answer might be, just buy an Apple, or alike ;)

Plain old recommendations are also obviously welcome. My work life kept me away from my hobbies for the last six years. On returning, I find the hardware situation to be vastly more complicated. Among other things, GPUs are much more important (if you can find good ones) and AMD rivals (or perhaps beats) Intel.

Thank you very much.

wtf that's terribly overpriced. You can literally have 2 high end PCs for that much.

Maybe worth to mention, AMD Zen series is divided as Epyc for server, Threadripper for workstation and Ryzen for desktop, each offering different feature sets in PCIe lanes, memory channels and max RAM, with Ryzen going currently up to 16 and the others to 64 cores, with Epyc available in dual socket configs.

I am also stranded to seek the possibility to host lichess like server with 1k active players capacity per hour on single machine under $3000, or 2 machines under $2500 each. My laptop cant handle 10 users with 6gh RAM when played on wifi lan.

The big cloud players like Amazon AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure offer virtual machines to rent with 1 up to 128 cores and different RAM, SSD configs, I suggest to start with an little VM, then scale up/out with more users, and at some break-even point it pays off to buy own hardware or rent an own dedicated server for your project. I myself prefer local/regional cloud providers over the big players.
