Help Please…choosing a dedicated chess machine.

Post by Jaimes Conda »

When I travel I like to play a game of chess. I have a laptop with chess software installed but do not particularly like looking at a flat screen to play.

Playing options and features are more important to me than strength which should be 1800elo max.

I have contemplated Alexandra by Excalibur because of it’s elo rating and physical size but it lacks my wish list of:
Change play styles, book opening options, selective or brute force, change piece value, force king attack, etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Jaimes

P.S. I have the Excalibur Grandmaster but it is a problem to stuff it into my briefcase

If you don't like flat screen, this is the smallest portable with your elo range

I agree. Nevertheless, it is an old program. First it was delivered as Fritz 1 by Morsh in the 90's.
But is strong and have anything required and more.
First was called Travel master by Fidelity, then got another consoles and names, always same program.
Hard to beat and entertaining.

Hi, buy an Apple iPod Touch 2, there are several chess programs available for it at iTunes, all for under US$ 10 !

Sean thanks for the reply. I already have CM9, CMX, F9 & H12 software on a laptop. I prefere to play on a real 3D board.
I don't need more than 1800elo but DO want lots of playing options & features.

What about the Novag Jade, or Jade 2.I had one of these and it played about 1800.It is a pity that all those peg sensor chess boards have cheap ugly piece sets which spoils the fun.I don't know why they couldn't make a nice small moulded chess set.

Interesting that you should mention the peg pieces for the Jade
here are Jade II pieces..with a bit of an artistic face lift:
