According to my available information, my guess is that Komodo 8 will be close to the top but 10 to 20 Elo Points below the top leading compile SF250814MZ x64 SSE4.2, under my testing -4 and 6 cores- conditions. This Am0s' compile is around 80 Elo Points better than Komodo 7, 60 Elo Points better than Houdini 4 and 20 Elo Points better than Stockfish 5.

Needless to say that I will be delighted to buy this new version of Komodo as soon as it appears. Tank you very much, Larry -and team- for your great work. It is not easy at all to follow the impressive pace of Stockfish and -if my guess is right- your Komodo 8 will be very close to the strongest compile of this wonderful engine.

Best regards from Barcelona.

Tom.

... by the way, the pricing of the new Komodo 8, having into account the discount for old customers seems to me very reasonable.
Hello,

Where can I find the compile of this Stockfish "SF250814MZ x64 SSE4.2" ?

first Rybka = Fruit
first Komodo = Doch
first Doch = Don, and nothing to do with Rybka!

Larry help Don so many years before Rybka. Larry and Don are many years the team. OK, Larry gave a part of code to Rybka ... after Version 1.0 of Rybka ... and that have also nothing to do that Larry have anything to do with cloning Fruit.

Larry and Don are honest People / programmers.
Vas are never honest to the community.
Who are Vas to explain what happened.

Rybka is out of my testing for ever!

Hello Frank,

As I mentioned before,
I respect your decision...you are free to test any engine which you like or not

But one little point:
Rybka Authors are Vasik Rajlich, Larry Kaufman

Think a little bit please over this issue ;)

You are a clever person..I know you will see what I am meaning

Analyze that
This is not an accurate comparison. Komodo by itself (without a GUI, like Stockfish) is under $60, while the ChessBase version (which includes GUI, book, Playchess) is about $95. I don't know where you got the $80 price, but the proper figure for your comparison would be $60. In any case, for many people that difference is a lot and I expect they will just get Stockfish, while for many other people $60 is a small amount and they will get whichever engine they prefer, or more likely, both. I will the first to say, Stockfish is clearly underpriced at zero dollars!
Hello Larry,

I know many players, including myself, use two engines in conjunction when preparing an opening line/book for play. So, if they want the best two I would say Stockfish and K8 would be the way to go :D

Most humans play chess engines on cell phones and iPods now. If you want to increase revenue you need an Android and iOS version. I downloaded the first iOS version and it was junk even for $0.99. I would suggest asking Stockfish if you can use their GUI for free, I think they would be happy to give it to you! Oh, please include a large opening book this time too

Good luck with your project.

Cordially,

Sean

Am in Marbella on vacation, last night had dinner in beach side restaurant with my wife and two toddlers. I ordered chicken with fries and diet coke, wife ordered sea bass with roast potatoes and orange juice, and we ordered a plate of chicken nuggets and french fries for the kids and later one chocolate cake with one scoop vanilla ice cream shared for wife and kids and I ordered a de-caffeinated cappuccino. Total cost ... 127 euros before tip.

If you enjoy chess and look at the time and effort to produce a chess engine and slowly and methodically and tirelessly strive to improve performance and strength, and you look at the cost of even an average item today ... you will realize that it is an incredible bargain. Sure SF is a great engine and is free ... but that is because all the people involved are not charging anything for their thousands of man hours of working on the engine! So stop complaining about the relative negligible cost of Komodo ... if you want a free engine, you can always get SF.

No reason to apologies to Larry and Mark.
Larry and Mark are strong and have a result in Komodo for us for the comminity.

We need Larry and Mark in the future more as others, because Larry and Mark go in front with such a strong engine. I am sure that Larry and Mark will thinking about my words here.

...

What you wrote is nice to read but fact is you are testing clones and you gave clones the stage. You are one of the person with gave the Virus to others. We have to kill the host I think and the Topic will be history.

Graham also to your person ...
I have nothing again your person, your work is fantastic but in cases of clones your old opinion are better as the newer you have today. So you gave up!

It's OK ...
I will never gave up!

Hello Majd,

A good appetite ))

I have never been in Marbella, how is that place, do you like it ?

About rest your opinions, I agreed...
Everybody is free to express own opinions and free to test which chess engine like or not...

For example,
I am a tester since 1997 years...I have tested many engines (commercial, free, private, even clones etc...)

And now is time for open-source engines...it is my fashion nowadays ))
To be honest, I started to see chess engines as opening books
If it is stronger I will buy it if not...sorry...
Even the commercial books suffer...due to they are available
Of course there is a solution, in case of often updates...

Btw,
On the other hand I am happy that Komodo is available...(many thanks to the creators of Komodo)
Because I believe that the competition helps to develop stronger engines

Sedat Canbaz wrote:BTW, here is my opinion about new commercial engine releases which are weaker than Stockfish or playing at near Elo level:
I can change my mind about allowing commercial engines in SCCT,
If the commercial authors will give as present their engines + paying my hardware electricity bills!

There will be exception only in case, I mean: I can pay and test their commercial engines,
If there will be available X commercial engine which will be at least +100 Elo stronger than free available engine (currently Stockfish)
Then it does not matter the price...I am ready to pay 100 Euro, 200 Euro or even more...

Otherwise...I can't see any reason to buy it...

In other words my dear friend, it all depends on you )
And I believe that you will make the right decision !!

Greetings,
Sedat
We will normally give a free copy of Komodo on request to any respected individual or group who tests engines and provides a rating list that is well known. We would be glad to do so for you if you decide to test all top commercial engines who do the same. But you ruled that out by asking for money for your electric bill, which of course neither Komodo nor any other commercial engine would offer, as we would have to do the same for all the testing groups and then they would have their neutrality questioned. As long as you don't have to pay for an engine yourself, why should you test freeware but not commercial software? For many people the cost of engines like Komodo is rather insignificant. If someone spends thousands of dollars to get a good computer for chess, another $60 for the engine is hardly a consideration. I realize that for many people $60 is not a trivial sum, but that shouldn't be an issue for a tester.

Best regards, Larry
Right now I noticed your message

Thank you that you are counting me in that group!
But right now I can't...sorry, maybe next time...!

Btw,
Believe me I have nothing against your engine and I respect all programmers work...

Nowadays there are more than 500 chess engines, which I wish to test all of them...but unfortunately I can't.... due to no time for all

About electricity bills,
It was a joke))...don't take too seriously this saying ))

Note also that my work is not so cheap too...!

But however, I wish good luck to Komodo team,
And I hope you will gain a lot of money....!!!
