Hi,

I just downloaded Maverick 1.0 and will be using it for future gauntlet testing of my engines. Thanks!

Did you do any isolated testing with beta pruning? Do you think it was an essential part of the ELO boost? I've tried beta pruning before with very mixed results. And I haven't looked recently but I think stockfish used to do this (labelled as "static null move pruning") and it has been removed in recent versions.

Thanks,
STC

Hi Shawn,

I haven't tested beta pruning extensively. I don't think it's adding too much of the strength improvement. I'd estimate maybe 20 ELO - but that's just a guess.

The reason I added it was it was super simple to implement. It did decrease Maverick's tactical ability so I may take it out as I add more aggressive LMR or other selective search schemes.

Thanks for testing,

Steve
