it would be good for chess to have a champion who reigns supreme for a prolonged period of time.

chess is not like other physical sports, where tropheys could change hands every year or so.

becoming first at chess requires much bigger effort than being first at any physical sport. sporting tricks are learned much faster than all the knowledge chess includes.
