I have no excuse for not picking those engines, other than the urge to gamble. Here is my reduced list were I picked the engines from, note that some of the engines I picked werent even rated.

If being a follower would have been intentional, I would have followed Jim Ablett and got shared 1st place. Food for my thought.

I don't think you were following anyone, but there will be new rule, dude
from next edition, the rule is that if A wins the division, and if someone else(B) picked the same engines as the one who replied earlier(A), then the winner(A) who posted earlier will get +0.5 points

in other cases, if someone finishes 2nd, and other guy who replied with same pair of engines as the one who finished 2nd,then there wouldn't be point deductions for both of these guys.

How does that sound?

I still like better the idea about taking into account the order of the guessed engines and giving points accordingly, for example:

Guessing first place right: +1.0
Guessing second place right: +0.5
Guessing third place right: +0.25

And just not allow followers (They can still guess the same engines, just in different order, and the order decides the winner.)

This way, even if you came late to the competition and someone else picked your engines, you still can win by choosing them in a better order. (Note that something like this was suggested by someone else [Pedro, I think], and that when I made this suggestion, it was deleted by moderation.)

good idea but I don't think new members or others would choose engines in order since it would look like there is another competition for them to concentrate on, they simply pick 3 engines and leave them alone out of order..

OK, getting back to the original idea, I don't think that it is fair for the person followed to gain +0.5 points just for having a follower, so it must be a -0.5 penalty to the follower. Though this would only discourage following, so I still think that adding bonuses for getting the engines in exact order (regardless of followers) would be a good solution.

Perhaps we can combine both ideas, like "You can pick the same engines as another person as long as they have another ordering, or pick the same order with a -0.5 penalty."

Also, we could decrease the bonuses so they're basically only used to tie-breaks (when someone is a follower) but people don't need to focus on getting the engines right, such as:

Guessing first place right: +0.4
Guessing second place right: +0.2
Guessing third place right: +0.1

This way, the game should remain the same, as getting first place right is not going to win you anything, unless someone follows you and it becomes important.
