My old octal runs at around 74-77 after it's had a good clean.Chessqueen wrote: ↑Fri Aug 20, 2021 2:28 am You really do not want your CPU temperature higher than 75

When it goes up to 90, it quite often stops the programs it was running.

Some of newer CPUs are less heat senstive, I thermal throttle the AMD 3970x to 80. No issues at all for 18 months , running at times 24x7 at full throttle.Chessqueen wrote: ↑Fri Aug 20, 2021 2:28 am You really do not want your CPU temperature higher than 75

I do. I had a hell of a time getting my 32-core Threadripper cool enough with air cooling. A big cooler + a lot of fans and it finally runs ok 24/7. It does still hit 80 degrees once in a while if the ambient temp is high.
My main Windows desktop still is triggering the temp alarm though under load. It has a Noctua cooler but with only one fan installed. I need to add one on the other side of the cooler, I think that will do it.

With dual 2060 RTX's I started having a heat issue , especially when I started running the RTXs to generate the second generation NNUE files., so I just picked of one these bad boys and set it up to blowing directly on the RTXs at the back of the case , it moves a lot of air the second lowest setting ( important to keep noise down). It's an air-duct fan.jdart wrote: ↑Fri Aug 20, 2021 5:29 am I do. I had a hell of a time getting my 32-core Threadripper cool enough with air cooling. Monitoring CPU temperature and fan speed at least occasionally is something I'd recommend.
Recently I had an issue when my old CPU cooler could no longer maintain high RPMs for some reason and the CPU got to 95 degrees, so thermal throttling kicked in. I bought a new cooler right away - problem solved.
I use HWiNFO, it's great for this purpose. Displays fan speeds and all sorts of other useful stuff too. In particular, it indicates which cores - if any - are throttled, in fact that's how I found out what was going on.

I do not see much of an increase in Elo between a 32 core Threadripper and using half of the of those 32-core (16-core). I bet you that if you have a match of 100 games with 32 core Stockfish Vs 16 core Stockfish the 32 core will not score more than 25 % over the 16 core, and the temp will lower below 65 degrees.jdart wrote: ↑Fri Aug 20, 2021 5:29 am I do. I don't just use it for gameplay. I use it for testing, tuning, generation of training data, etc. 32 cores is handy for that stuff. (I also have a 24 core dual Xeon, plus a 128-core (4x32) server box in the basement. Sometimes I use all those cores).Chessqueen wrote: ↑Fri Aug 20, 2021 5:48 pm I do not see much of an increase in Elo between a 32 core Threadripper and using half of the of those 32-core (16-core). Re: How many of you monitor your CPU temperature?
Hello:
I check it less than monthly but more than yearly with Everest software... I know, I should check it more frequently. We are at the end of a heat wave here in Spain and I just ran a short analysis with SF 14 under Arena 2.0.1 GUI in my Intel i5-650 (two physical cores) using four threads, analysing the famous Topalov - Shirov position 47.- ..., Bh3 (game here). The temperature was between '43 ºC (109 ºF)' and '44 ºC (111 ºF)' during the analysis of something less than ten minutes. Everest outputs '45 ºC (113 ºF)' right now, once that short analysis is finished.
Regards from Spain.

VRM temps are just as important I think. However not all motherboards have the sensors to enable you to see them.
