Desperately Seeking Chess System Tal 2's Patch 2.03

Post by frankiekam »

Hi All

Hi. I am looking for Patch 2.03 of Chess System Tal 2. It seems to be lost in the ether. Why am I looking for it? Well, I recently installed Chess System Tal 2 after more than 10 years of laying in my CD/DVD box, and I would like to update it to its strongest iteration. I have a soft spot for chess engines that play like humans, especially a certain human who was a magician from the magical city of Riga. I was tinkering around with OpenTal 1.1, and suddenly a voice whispered in my ear, "Remember Chess System Tal 2?". So I am on Quest. A quest to find an old patch.

Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers
Frankie "Durian Defense" Kam

As far as i remember you only need to exchange the executable.
Also one has to see that cstal2 has no style features anymore.

That was a feature of the dos version.
I think it should be possible to use cstal dos to create a style and copy it into the datafile directory with the name chess.sty

The programmers translated / transferred all the features of the DOS engine into windows.
There were so many features that they were not finished,

E.g. the database features/menues and the styling and many graphical feature were not yet transferred when CSTal 2 was published.

Instead new features were done e.g. server play.

But related to the dos version the features in CSTal2 are very rudimentary.

Thats why i often like to use the DOS version instead the windows version.
It gives more fun.

no, it's not lost in ether - it's in my chess archive. ;)

The download is working.

Zippyshare is IP blocked though for lots of countries for several years already ;-)
(Operas 'VPN mode' would be sufficient)

Yes, as you can read on my homepage https://fhub.jimdofree.com/ I don't like it, when direct links to my webfolder
are put on any other websites - I expect, that other websites link to my homepage but not directly to my program files!
(whenever I see such a direct link anywhere, I change this link again  )

Oops, I thought you meant the zippyshare link for the topic of this thread.

Thank you also mclane! From your information, I can reason that a finely-tuned CSTal DOS version would beat CSTal2.03, say, in a 10-game match. Or at the very least, play more speculative chess sacrifices.
