Thats about 600 KN/s more than on my iPad, and we have the same model. :o Maybe you did the test in your freezer so it doesn't throttle down ?

More seriously, maybe you have the 1TB version ? It has 6 GB of RAM when the other models only have 4 GB. That might help Stockfish get larger hash table...

The iPad Pro I have has 256 GB memory. However I did 5 more benchmarks and could not reproduce my original result. I got these results:

8500.3 KN/s
8205.2 KN/s
8665.2 KN/s
8549.8 KN/s
8497.6 KN/s

I waited 2 or 3 minutes between tests and made sure there were no open apps in the background. So maybe it would be fair to take the average of these five results (about 8483.6) for my result.

Also, I have noticed any type of case will help it retain heat and noticeably slow it down as well, For best results, go to Nome, Alaska when it's -32 degrees outside with a stiff wind. :D

I am not sure what you define as "most" "i7 desktops"..

I ran test on an old i7-6700k that was less than half the price (including screen) of a 512GB iPad Pro with latest 7mm A12X and got about 12.120.000.

Even one of my older laptops Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4712HQ CPU @ 2.30GHz, 4-core CPU i got 7.300.000 sustaned kn/s.

With the bold claims from Apple and 7nm 8-core CPU i was dissapointed that it can't even do 12000kn/s :-(

8.395 is impressive for a "phone" but not anything near modern desktop class (not even faster than most similar priced laptops today ):-(

even an Intel Core i5-8305G @ 2.80GHz runs stockfish faster than the A12X 7nm

So, there we have it : faster than most Core i7 desktop computers !

Code: Select all

iPad Pro 2018 12.9" (A12+) 8.395.000 NEW

On my Acer aspire E17 with i7 7500U Stockfish is doing 3232 on 4 core after 2‘

Maybe your machines are too fast while my machine is too slow.

well. your Acer E17 is certainly not a "desktop"-class computer. It's a budget laptop with one of the slowest 2-core i7-cpus, and you can pick one up today for a price less than half of an iPad Pro.. but you should reach about 5000kn/s if you tune your win/Linux settings with ease. the current Acer E5 laptop with i7-8550U would provide similar performance of an 1200usd iPad for only about 700USD, but its still not comparable to i7 desktops.

I think many people make the misstake of thinking i7 is ONE cpu. and tha U models for laptops are similar to K-models etc for desktops.. i7 is just a name for many different CPUs both low-power and desktop cpus. some i3s and i5 models are actually faster than some i7 models. the key factor as always will be number of cores, frequency and power-csumption.
