Jim Ablett: Something's wrong with Protector 1.3.5

Post by Martin Thoresen »

Been wondering why it's playing so badly in my tournament, and now
that I am paying attention to it it's easy to see that something's wrong
when you look at the nodes/sec count and hash % usage.

Next time I will definitely test each new version before I use it in a
tournament, but I was certain it would be no problems with this engine.

Hi Martin,

Does Raimund's compile exhibit the same behaviour ?
(You can find Raimund's compiles with the src >
http://sourceforge.net/projects/protector/)

Don't know if this is related but check out the 36th game, it was Protector vs Shredder from the fourth round. Went out of book on the first move.

Raimund's one works just fine....

Here's a screenshot of Raimund's build, with the exact same position as in the previous screenshot. Speed is almost 7200 kn/s.

Yeah, 1.b3 made things go out of book pretty fast. ;)

Anyway, that game has just been restarted now with the proper build. It seems Protector already have gotten a nice initiative (at move 25).

Thanks again for following!

Hi Martin,

Yes there is a problem with the Windows Intel 64 bit compile. I haven't given it top priority to fix at the moment because Raimund's build is working just fine.
I kept the download available at my site primarily for my 32 bit compile which works with older processors whereas Raimund's does not.

Thanks, Jim. Using the original compile, it works fine.

By the way, do you know if there is somewhere I can see what changes
there are between each new version of Protector? I can't find anything
official within the archives.

Thanks.

I can't find anything understandable for someone like me, for example
"blablabla evaluation changed, should be a little stronger" etc.
Raw code doesn't do much for me. But that doesn't matter.

I saw it said 1.3.6 in the text_changed part, any clue about that?
