2 Stockfish 4 xxxx +796 +27/=17/-36 44.38% 35.5/80
Two brilliant gems by Komodo:

These masterpieces have been produced under the condition of less than one minute per game, on an average off-the-shelf notebook in 2013.

I have tried those settings in the past and never found them to be very good. Either Stockfish wins in brutal fashion or it gets crushed just as brutally.

Is there a place where people are trying different settings and posting results? I would like to add my own..

Peter
heh heh...like I said earlier, those settings do not work, or if at all, inconsistently.
My (secret) Setting involves only one parameter change and it beats Houdini 3 consistently.
As everyone knows, in Engine-Engine matches even involving different Engines more than 90 % of the moves can be predicted by the opposing Engine.
But what I find interesting about this S4 is that it frequently surprises H3 with its move choices.....some of which are so drastically different from what H3 was expecting, that it forces H3 to entirely change its line of thinking, to H3's detriment ! .....like H3 may be expecting a King-side move and thinking hard about it, but suddenly S4 makes a Queen-side move and that too a good one, forcing H3 to recalculate everything ! :D Of course, all this requires that one parameter change, without which S4, even though still very strong, becomes nothing very outstanding as Hurnavich at the rybka forum has found.

Sorry that we did not give you the advice to try x64_modern.

I had not realized the x64__modern was an option that you had not tried yet. It was also not entirely clear what modern computers really meant, ...
No problem, I was under the impression that "modern" means "compiled for W7" as this was a problem with one of the last Stockfish releases and as modern+SSE42 did not run I did not try "modern" ...

Anyhow, it works now.

Thx again

For people like you, that I don't consider a casual user, it is of course preferable to have the complete choice so what I missed in the announcement and what I'd like to add now is the following: the Stockfish 4 release package includes pre-compiled binaries fro the most common cases, for special requirement, like obsolete hardware, please refer to the full list of available Windows and Linux binaries at http://abrok.eu/stockfish/
Thats already much better, but as there is no difference between the modern+SSE42 and modern many AMD users will fail with modern+SSE42 and then have to fall back to 32 bit ....
If you replace the modern+SSE42 with the normal 'modern' averyone has POPCNT, so everyone intel user has the same speed as now and basicaly all AMD users have 20 to 25% more as they don't have to use the 32 bit version ...

Anyhow - I am happy now. Thanks for Stockfish 4 and all the work the team puts into it!

Hmmmm,strange.......

Well,I'm glad that you found your magic setting....

I am a hardcore fan of tunning the chess engines and I'll be more than happy to post some of my advanced findings when I have enough games played....

Hope you'll do the same thing regards,

Really? In any case, it's an irrelevant point unless you want to claim that the majority of open source chess software is designed to make money.
Please don't be a troll and ruin this thread.
Charming. It seems that you don't want to acknowledge that it could be the different, co-operative development models of Stockfish and Ippolit that led to their successes; indeed, you call such open source progress "irrelevant". On top of that, you as a businessman claim that most open source is really business driven too, with the implication that therefore it can be no better ethically than what you are doing. In a thread like this where a lot of love is being shown for open source Stockfish, it is you who introduces a sour tone.

Having said all that, and despite what you just called me, I wish you every commercial success with Komodo, and publicly thank you for the free copy that you sent me.

"Aggressiveness 120

Cowardice 110"

Hmmm... just wondering - this change looks like two steps forward
and one backwards ---- 20 p more aggressive and 10 p more coward...

What's the difference compared with A=110 and C=100 or maybe even
A=120 and keeping C=100 ?? These not working so well ?

I don't like them either but this is what I photographically remembred in a thread posted in the tournament section a while back.....

Anyways, playing around with the contempt factor is the way to go IMHO....

Unfortunately, nowadays I have no computer power free to run tests with tweaked versions of Stockfish....

I hope someone will share with us a good settings....

Fern, I am buggered. I can only do 18 to 20 ply searches in my ape's brain. I will never draw this program unless I use the ARB system.
