Graham, so would I. I respect Richard and wish him no harm, and hope that all this will not degenerate any further.Graham Banks wrote:Robert - although I disagree strongly with what Richard did, I'd be saddened if you felt compelled to take legal action.
But it is important to understand that I not only have the right but also the obligation to take the necessary steps to protect myself and important partners like ChessBase and ChessOK against illegal and illegitimate actions.
All the best,
Robert

That is a whole nuther subject that you have to handle the way you feel is best. As for this topic with all these threads, take some good advice. Get as far away from this gobbledegook as possible, and don't look back. For this topic to have any traction at all- they have to be able to suck you into the discussion.
Best,
george

PS - his web page acknlowledgement for 'ideas' has changed and now includes Robbolito:
"Without many ideas from the excellent open source chess engines Ippolit/Robbolito, Stockfish and Crafty, Houdini would not nearly be as strong as it is now."
so there may be hope after all...
Sorry but what you are saying is ridiculous! The names used are obviously FAKE names ... and could have easily been Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck. If you enjoy playing the idiot game and give credit to Mickey Mouse for writing a chess engine, don't expect others to follow suit.

I think there is nothing illegitimate that was done so far as the code was not distributed. Anyway the effort is certainly not worth it and this is not a case you can win. Best thing is to keep improving and adding ELO. If you have the roof down on a sports car and it starts raining and you don't want to get wet or put the roof down ... you just drive faster!

Do not argue otherwise, but think that if this well signed, so is.M ANSARI wrote:

The names listed in the project, and must be respected,
are real, they are pseudonyms.
There are many engines that the author is a pseudonym, many.
You have to respect everyone, unless you want to give credit, not of.
But the pseudonym is accepted in all the sciences and arts.
It is used inter alia for preserving identity.

Listen, are you in a state of hysteria or what? YOU posted a link to the value of translations in a past post to which I replied. Do you want now to insist you didn't?hgm wrote: You must be confusing me with someone else. I hardly ever post links other than to downloads of my own software.
And then I've seen that instead of talking about the issue at hand (i.e. the value of translating captions in a source as copyright) you have switched talking about HT, that HAS NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH IT.
What's up? Since you obviously have been proven wrong and couldn't accept it you miraculously turned switching to another thing altogether in the hope to find a way out?
But anyway, let's end all this farce and simply ask you a question:
Do you REALLY believe that translating captions in a source can have IP attached to it and it's possible to ENFORCE (legally, not with words) the copyright of the same?
Now, tell me, because if you really believe something as this your level of absurdity is skyhigh.
P.S: Btw if in ever once in your life *you* will be right and I wrong in whatsoever argument, it will probably mean that the end or the world is near. Believe me, you have no possibility against me, there's no way. Just a friendly hint.

Then what are you doing here ?Houdini wrote: What exactly should I be wanting to end? All this is forum gibberish, quite far removed from the reality of engine development and marketing.
You have chosen to participate in a community who value honesty as a great good when it comes to engine origins. You have chosen to lie about the origin of Houdini. Your choice. Fine. But don't insult the forum members for having a problem with your dishonesty.
Honesty matters because you got the first 3000 elo for free and that in a competitive field of chess programmers who write their own stuff from the ground up. Naturally their question is deservedly, this is about COMPETITION and the right to know what they are competing.
If you don't like the conscience of this community go elsewhere.
You are hypocritical now, it was me quoting EU law on which you greedily anticipated. Furthermore you are bluffing taking this to court, not worth the money and the stress involved. Furthermore Richard is quite popular and such an action will backfire on you. You are intelligent enough to realize this hence I call it a bluff on your end. Else the ChessBase folks will explain it to you how this wafer thin market segment works. What remains is the question why you've created a thread about a perceived but pretty much non-existing ethical problem, and not about the very real LEGAL problem that Richard's recent actions have created.

Are you addicted to ad-hominems or what? You were mentioning a link in the Hyper Threading discussion, which was totally off topic for the current issue. It is very weird that you took offense to me posting a link to the manual page of the SetAffinityMask function when somone asks me how to set affinity. And that it upsets you so much that you still feel compelled to mention it one month later is positively unhealthy...Lavir wrote:Listen, are you in a state of hysteria or what? So, why did you mention it? You felt your arguments on the topic at hand were so weak you needed a little character assasination to back it up? Don't worry, I have no intent to take up the discussion about HT with you again. As I said then, you seem so ignorant on the subject that it would just be a waste of my time! And then I've seen that instead of talking about the issue at hand (i.e. the value of translating captions in a source as copyright) you have switched talking about HT, that HAS NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH IT.
Apart from bragging, you don't seem to be much good for anything. What are your acheivements here, if I may ask? What's up? Since you obviously have been proven wrong and couldn't accept it you miraculously turned switching to another thing altogether in the hope to find a way out?

Learn how to write without aiming to insult, and I might actually address the topic again. Untill then, you can roll in your own dirt!
