Christopher Conkie wrote:Its not about that HG. It is really about lack of permission. It is about taking the law into ones own hands. I am sure you can agree that those who would receive no support. Arena is not GPL. You cannot just put it somewhere without permission, The fact that most of these indiscretions happen in the eastern block says more about their mentality than anyone else's. Arena is free, just like Winboard. Arena is not free to host anywhere without permission.
I still don't see what any of that has to do with Red Queen...

It does know the rules of the game: it scans the board for the king, finds the first one, determines that it is under attack, and moves it to a position where it no longer is under attack.
It appears to do the board-scan in the reverse direction for white compared to black as well. It doesn't just play some random move that violates the rules, it plays the most rule-compliant move that it can in an illegal position.

Jazz probably does something similar (it doesn't invert the direction of the board scan and it will ignore all kings except for the "first" one), although I really don't know. It's supposed to play chess, and in chess there is only ever one king to each side.
Sjaak, on the other hand, will proceed to exchange kings and win the end game where it is a king up.
Any decent engine would check the position...it is the first thing one does when implementing a chess program.
Ok, I guess I'd better stop referring to my programs as chess programs then.
I am not amazed to see you and others don't care about copyrights and the work of others...
You are on shaky ground here. Very shaky.

Mine also finds the presented mate in one instantly, doesn't play with no kings, adjacent kings, multiple kings, pawns on 1st/8th rank, it just shows an error message.
Well, like I said, that is just an opinion. If your engine would not be able to play "1q1qk1q1/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/NNNNKNNN w - - 0 1" or "rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/PPPPPPPP/PPPPPPPP/PPPPPPPP/PPPPPPPP w kq - 0 1" and produce some pedantic error message in stead, I would call it "crappy", rather than "decent". That of course is also just an opinion. But what is a fact is that the engines that you consider "decent" are a lot less useful than the ones you don't consider such. So it seems that although all opinions are equal, some opinions are more equall than others...

Hi,

My chess program doesn't do that...

Sais who ? Russian sources who also said in the past the Arena project is dead ? They also said they were not hosting Arena which they do, read Pravda and belive them :)

I like hunting people from university accounts, that was fun...

But the remarkable thing is that Arena seems to allow such positions. If we must believe the screenshot you posted here. While testing the legality of the position is arguably much more a responsibility of the GUI than of the engine. To my knowledge UCI protocol does not even support a mechanism for an engine to complain about legality of a position. The only thing it could do is refuse to move, (send a null move), to be consequently forfeited on time for it.

So it seems that by your own standards, Arena is not a "decent" GUI!
