Trying to break open the Black king's defense via g5.
I looked at that a bit, here are my notes....I admit I am not positive about the final position, which is kind of complicated, but my impression is the tactics are good for black, particularly if black is a computer .
15. g4 bc 16.bc Bd8 then if 17.g5 Nh7! and if 18.gh g6! and its complicated by I got the feeling black stood better, maybe much better. Which means 17. g5 is to soon, so maybe 17. h3 is necessary. But if that's the case, then the whole push is too soon, so we may as well prepare a bit first.

Here is the position that had me so interested that I spent ages exploring this last night.

Black is a pawn up but his Bishop is for the moment trapped and the Queen is a little out of place and Black's King also looks a little trapped. Using the Knight, both Rooks and the Queen to put pressure on g-file, there surely has to be a way to crack Black's defense.... but it soooooooo risky because it is sooooo complicated to predict the Computer moves.
Anyway I am not suggesting we should follow this line at all. I just find it an interesting challenge.

Gosh that is complicated . It is quite possible that white is good there, and definitely the type of line a computer is likely to follow. I don't think I have time to figure out what is going on there right now. If someone else studies it and tells me white is good, I will just believe them and change my vote .

Why does Black have to play Bd8 in this line?
Well, if black does something else, like ...Qa4, then I think white g5 actually might be a good move. So ...Bd8 is to create tactics against the g5 push.

Why does Black have to play Bd8 in this line?
Black doesnt there are other options but I suspect the g4 move will make Black consider King safety... which makes Bd8 a possible prefered choice for a computer but definately not the only choice. The threats of g5 and f4 will be things that it will consider.
As I said I am just sharing what intrigued me yesterday.... and it is definately risky, complicated and very unclear. I am sure there are better moves then the immediate f4.

wait...I haven't been using a computer because I thought it was off limits. Otherwise I might use it occasionally to check my work or something. I haven't been following these games for a couple of months, am I right that computers are off limits?

Hi Sam,
Yes, they are off limits, or I assume they are. Trust me when I say I play thousands of manual input games per year with my compies... therefore you get to have a feel to what they might do.
As I mentioned but perhaps not clearly enough, I spend hours last night on A CHESSBOARD, because the g4 move looked interesting to me followed with f4. That position arose after I realized that Bd8 might be a serious option for the computer to play because of the possible to potential threats of g5 and I wanted to see where the pawn sacrifce would end up as a position. If you consider Bd8 an option and you want to see what f4 does then these moves are all automatic.
All this is still pie in the sky if Black does not play bxc4 next move
