A bit off-topic, but since this is my own thread............

BoCC and EAS work also for human-human games. From an old Chessbase Megabase cdrom I took the games, about 2.3 million, selected 44 top players and ran Both BoCC and EAS. And the oldies did remarkable well, Paul Morphy obviously the best.

Hi Stefan,
pohl4711 wrote: Thu Jul 24, 2025 7:10 am Hi Ed,

here a game from my 15000 games Torch 4 testrun. A Queensac (move 29): Even Stockfish needs some seconds to find it in singlethread-mode. But late in the game: Move 29. And no King-Attack. Could be a huge problem for your tool?! You should consider to include a sac-search in your tool, IMHO.
I believe I already told you I am not enthusiastic to add a third (sacrifice) part to my tool since there already is an overlap with king-attack and shorties, adding sacrifice code would make this too much (rewarding too many games twice or even triple) AND most of the sacrifices are already covered in the king-attack part.

Secondly, your tool has already have it and trust me, it is the best part of your tool.

Really nice!
Wrote some more about it already at CSS, as you probably know:

Just because pgn- reader works better here (for more than 1 game per site), I would also like to show 4 games I did let play out SF dev. 250702 against Crystal 9 from both positions, after the sac and after the next best also winning move 29...Qa1 (moves like which will be reason probably, that sac isn't chosen by most engines at first trial with little hardware- TC) with reversed colours each.
TC was 25'+5", both engines had 15 threads of a 16x3.5GHz CPU:

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Forum is rather slow again at the moment.
At the position after 28th move, there are 3 winning moves for White, 29.Qa1, 29.Qxb6 and 29.Rxf4+, all winning for sure and rather equally fast, as far as I saw till now. So if the position is used for testing engines with, in MultiPV=3 mode these 3 should be shown with winning eval for White, in MultiPV=4 clearly distincted from 4th one.
BTW Lc0 with net 6147500PT and 3070ti GPU choses 29.Qxb6 at once and has relevantly better eval for it than it shows for the other 2 candidates in MultiPV=3, regards
Peter.

If you dont want a double or triple scoring (IMHO this is not only complete OK, it is an improvement for the scoring-system. But this is just my personal view), you can easily follow the way my IWS-Tool goes:
If a game fits more than one category, it is stored in the lowest category, all other apperances of this game in higher categories are deleted. For example: A game contains a 3 PawnUnit-Sacrifice and is won before the endgame material is reached: This game is stored in category 4 (= 3 PawnUnit Sacrifices) and not in category 7 (= Game ended before endgame (material)). Because a 3 pawn-sac is more important than a game ending just with still a lot of pieces on the board.
So, you just have to prioritize the different parts of your tool (Sacs, King Attack, Shorties or any other sequence you like best) and then delete all games found by later parts of your tool, if an earlier part of your tool has already found these games.

And that will not make the tool much slower. I just used my IWS-Tool to investigate a 70000 games pgn-database. Took less than 4 minutes to compute...The IWS-Tool is way faster than the EAS-Tool, because it does not do any math and stats, just filtering games.

Made a start maintaining a huge collection of exciting games for download, see also at the end of the main page. Thanks to Stefan contributing about all his games (2.7M) of his SP-CC rating list.

the oldies did remarkable well, Paul Morphy obviously the best.
maybe because games of Nezhmetdinov were not included, then maybe
he would ended nr 1, and anyway somewhere in the top 5 i would expect.

44 top players and ran Both BoCC and EAS. And the oldies did remarkable well, Paul Morphy obviously the best.

Code: Select all

  EAS bad avg.win
Score sacs shorts draws moves Pplayer
218444 13.33% 59.33% 07.14% 30 Morphy, Paul

... several oldies

 83878 05.31% 27.47% 23.36% 38 Fischer, Robert James

 ... some more oldies

 55792 11.07% 22.54% 37.23% 41 Shirov, Alexei
 55294 07.23% 25.90% 37.69% 42 Tarrasch, Siegbert
 55249 08.91% 26.36% 46.80% 38 Tal, Mihail
 51299 09.58% 25.93% 39.85% 39 Kasparov, Garry

etc

[code]King Attack Rating List
Ranking % Player
 46156 20.7% Morphy, Paul

 ... several oldies and then

 30247 12.2% Tal, Mihail
 30199 12.0% Polgar, Judit
 29889 11.2% Shirov, Alexei

 ... and everybody else then

  19467 07.9% Karpov, Anatoly
I found the above filtered list remarkable. Otherwise, oldies are up there because the defensive skills significantly improved later.

Added Fritz 20.

Surprise -

On BoCC-3578 and EAS Fritz 20 is the best ELO engine.
