In the CT800, I have dedicated evals for the elementary endgames against the lone king. Obviously, material counts, but depending on the endgame in question, the position of the kings also.

For KQ:K, I give the material value of the queen plus 3 pawns because this is so easily won (encouriging trade-downs). Further bonus for the defending king closer to the rim of the board, and subtractions for more distance between attacking and defending king.

The result is that the engine wants to drive the defending king to the rim, which it does using the queen, and bringing its own king close. Then the search will do the rest and see the mate easily. It also helps that the defending king on the rim has only one or two legal moves, that cuts down the search tree.

This number sounds extremely low, do you mean layers or cells? How are your outputs represented?

If you have 2 hidden cells and then use an 8x8xN action space you're asking the network to embed every chess position in a 2 dimensional space and then extract all necessary information from that code to output reasonable moves. So what you're taking is the high-dimensional information of the position, compressing it to a 2d-code then you try to de-compress again out into your action space. There are occasions where compressions like these are useful (this is the topic of autoencoders) but I think it'll be extremely difficult for your network to learn anything useful about chess unless you grant it a richer internal representation.

I don't take it seriously. NN book said you should start with single cell learning first. So I started with taking least number of cells first.

Maybe it learns not to give away queens.

The more cells the many more time training time needed. I don't have GPU on my machine. Heard that GPU is about sixty times faster than CPU for these kinds of matrix computations.

At this moment with these small networks move generator is the bottleneck. So I first have to make it faster. I used the one from my previous engine where moves are ordered. But now move ordering is no longer needed only collecting legal moves.
