Ok by me. Be nice to have 2 or 3 matches going at the same time.
Also all the other posts would not be in the way of the matches.
Don't think it will happen unless we get more than 2 matches going
at the same time.

Best.

Well it seems from the responses that a dedicated computer will be taking part in the Next Forum game in some form or other
i wonder if it would add a bit more interest to keep the name of the dedicated computer hidden until after the game is complete?
i would of course make the approximate rating known from the start and would also let Ray know the model beforehand as he will be operating the PC Engine(assuming we play a tandem-type game)
i tried this once on another chess computer forum and it did seem to add a bit of "Mystery" to the game
might even be a thought to hold a contest afterwards to see if any member can pick the dedicated i used
of course is there is no interest in that sort of thing i would mention the name from the getgo

Random Musings Regards

I reckon the mystery would be good !

There is certainly interest in playing against your dedicated units, that is for sure. Wonderful pieces of history, where it all began (I think)

Yes i agree
the oldies brought the great hobby of computer chess to average everyday folks who were interested in the game of chess
whereas before their introduction into the consumer market(1977) computer chess was mainly a scientific exercise amongst computer scientists in the academic world
not that there was anything wrong with that mind you,but it changed everything when anybody could now play chess at anytime ..day or night with a willing partner(who did not mind if you took back moves)

Any thoughts about the ELO of the Forum's next opponent?

Matthias mentioned that BL was rated about 2150 Elo and it provided the forum with a very interesting defensive type of game which forced the players to develop an attacking plan and come out and fight

What strength would the forum players like to face in the next opponent?

As the players are not using any engines to make the moves for them i dont see the need to radically increase the strength of the next opponent as i imagine very few of us are rated 2400+
IMHO facing a GM level engine will only increase the temptation for the players to use engines and i dont really think many of us have any interest in playing an engine v engine match
these sorts of matches are played day in day out on other forums and they generally result in an endless stream of draws where the eval at any point in the game rarely exceeds +/-.06

as it looks now i will be operating a dedicated computer for at least part of the next game so i wont be playing on the teams side however if i were ..my personal preference would be an engine with an Elo of 2200-2250 .. just around Fide Candidate Master Strength
a Strong engine but not impossible to beat

i also think we should reverse colors for this game and take the Black Pieces

I am not involved in the game but I doubt if the claim that the players are not using any engines to make the moves for them is correct.

In the first game we had black less a pawn.
In the next game vs. your machine are you saying we should
have white or black. To gave away a piece to start was to
much for us to overcome. I agree that the chess programs
should not be over 2400. At least giving us a chance to win.

Best.

Gerold.

P.S.
Not that anyone would care my rating is 2147. :)

OK so you would prefer an engine no stronger then 2400
my preference was no stronger then 2250
i was suggesting that the TEAM have black this game..but its up to the team which color to take
my idea was alternating colors..
Game 1-Black
Game 2-White
Game 3-Black

in this game the team will probably not be playing against one of my computers initially
one of the ideas was to start a 960 game against an engine operated by Ray and then to switch to a dedicated computer(with an Elo of about the same strength as the engine) after castling....or perhaps even to alternate moves between the engine and the dedicated after castling

I don't think alternating moves would work very well, but will give it a try if that is what people want. I'm happy to run a chess960 engine in the opening phase before the match switches to one of Steve's dedicated units

If Ray plays till Chess960 castling rights vanish, then I think Steve should continue alone.
Maybe Ray should have the previlege of choosing the 2350-Elo engine.
I suggest that the forum plays black.

Matthias.
My engine was quite strong till I added knowledge to it.
