Game 5 - early exchanges lead to drawn endgame.

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 5

In a Grunfeld, the queens come off early, followed by several further exchanges. The resulting endgame is dead even and isn't a terribly exciting watch. Houdini leads by +1 =4 -0.

Game 7 - Komodo's kingside efforts defused. Drawn.

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 7

In a Giuoco Piano line, Komodo (as Black) makes overtures on the kingside. However, Houdini defends well and defuses any possible danger. After the position opens up a bit more, the queens come off and an endgame is reached. Both sides are happy to take a draw by repetition. Houdini leads by +1 =6 -0.

Game 8 - Komodo unable to procure an advantage - draw.

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 8

Komodo plays differently, exchanging queens to eliminate any kingside dangers. Play then switches to the queenside, and after several exchanges, the focal point becomes whether or not Komodo can take advantage of black's c-pawn. Everything is covered though and after further exchanges, the game is drawn. Houdini leads by +1 =7 -0.

Game 9 - Houdini opts to take early perpetual check

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 9

In a QGD line involving Qxg7, Houdini (as White) opts for an early perpetual check in a fairly messy position.

Game 10 - an interesting battle throughout, but drawn.

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 10

The opening and early middlegame proved to be very tricky and interesting in the return game of this line, eventually culminating in opposite side castling. Both sides felt that Houdini had a small edge. Even after the queens came off, there were possibilities in the position. However, although an endgame arose with rook and extra pawn against bishop and knight, the game was always going to be drawn by this stage. Houdini leads by +1 =9 -0.

Game 11 - after both flanks open up, a threefold repetition.

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 11

The opening line transposed into a Caro-Kann. Play initially focused on the queenside, but when things temporarily stalled there, Komodo (as Black) started opening up the kingside with pawn pushes. Houdini countered with a timely opening of the queenside and took the threefold repetition on offer. Houdini leads by +1 =10 -0.

Game 12 - queen and extra pawn v two rooks - drawn.

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 12

After the c-file was eventually opened, Komodo chose to allow its rooks to be traded for queen and pawn. Most interest following this centred on when Komodo would take one of the several drawing opportunities available. Houdini leads by +1 =11 -0.
