When trying to configure Stockfish 8 engine, not all of the parameters are visible in the configuration window that pops up. For example: hash table size is not something shown, so you cannot alter hash table size. The window appears to be too small to show all of the options that Stockfish 8 supports.
Hit F11, then click the 'UCI' tab and unclick "Common hash table size" ... "Common cpu..."
Then the settings will be adjustable from within SF's engine settings.
Oh, of course. I set this up so long ago on the Windows version I forgot about it!
I just checked my Scid database of engine-engine matches.
I have been using Arena GUI since March 2002.
The first instance of using it with wine on a linux computer was in August 2006.
Most of my engine matches these days are in Arena on my linux computers.
Apart from a few seconds extra delay when Arena first starts, due to wine starting, it seems just as good as when running in Windows.
For playing matches between native linux engines I am quite happy to use Xboard for which I have my tcl/tk scripts for choosing engines and setting options.

When I ran an engine tournament, the ABK books are loaded for white, but not for black!
White moves instantly at the beginning of the game (from book) and every black move is calculated by the engine instead of responding immediately from book.
