I downloaded 6.2.2 last night. Compiled cleanly and works fine. But it is pretty weak. As is 5.6 as well. But it certainly works reliably here, both on linux and apple os x 10.11.1. So it should work well for you.Frank Quisinsky wrote:Hi there,
at the moment I try to added more engines on my Rating List. I am looking most of the time in CEGT results for find out engines I can added in my list (equal playing strength).
I can see that GNUChess 5.6 will be a good engines for my League 3. But I don't understand the different to the newer GNUChess 6.2.2. After all I understand the newer GNUChess is completly new by Fabian. If so completly different engines are GNUChess 5.6 and version 6.2.2.

Re: Short questions (1): GNUChess 5.6 or 6.22 ... differents
I don't see the problem. It compiled cleanly out of the box on my Ubuntu and centos linux boxes, and it compiled and runs perfectly on my macbook even using the apple clang (llvm) C compiler. Don't see what all the fuss is about... portability seems fine to me, at least the unix version...Eelco de Groot wrote:Maybe this version should be renamed to CruChess 6. I can't believe Fabien is still involved in this, he was always for portability of code. Maybe interesting for Frank: as far as I know the GnuChess version from Michel incorporates changes inspired by Stockfish, and individually tuned by Michel. He stopped doing this as he wrote on this forum, but by then he had accumulated quite a few rating points. It is I think therefore (much) stronger than the Gnuchess based on Fruit...

http://hardy.uhasselt.be/GnuCheese/
GnuCheese is an independent fork of the venerable GNU Chess 5.07 chess
engine.
GnuCheese is unrelated to GNU Chess 6 which has been released by the
Free Software Foundation and which is a rebranded Fruit engine.
Currently GnuCheese is about 180 elo stronger than GNU Chess 6 at the
time control of 40 moves per 60 seconds.
This project was originally started as an attempt ot fix a number of
well-known bugs in GNU Chess 5.07 which dragged down its intrinsic
strength. A number of updated versions were released, the most recent
one being GNU Chess 5.60. To reduce the possibility of confusion with
GNU Chess 6, the engine has now been renamed as GnuCheese 1.00. This
is the name under which the 5.xx versions have been playing 24/7 on
FICS since 2009.

Re: Thanks ...
Hi Graham,
I saw that, looking for GNU Chess information but I am not sure what I should test, so I wrote here.
In CCRL GNU Chess5 5.60 is a bit stronger as GnuCheese 1.0.
Maybe I test later a newer version of GnuCheese.
For the moment I think 5.60 should absolutely added in my list (very important main engine). Furthermore, very strong if I compare the results CCRL and CEGT have with older versions of GNU Chess. The Group of GNU Chess5 programmers do a lot and I am sleeping and don't saw that.
Interesting are the engine parameters.
Nice for some possible experiments!

no problems here directly from the source 6.2.2
./configure ; make ; make install
Apple OS X 10.11.1
looks a little weak...under 2500

GNU Chess 6.2 and Fruit Reloaded
Hi Frank!Frank Quisinsky wrote:Hi there,
I believe Raptor could be private status?
Same for Fruit Reloaded by Daniel Mehrmann?
Sorry for the late response, i just overlooked your post.
GNU Chess 6.2 is Fruit 2.1, but they added a lot of crap around the engine code. I think they wanted a WB based engine instead of a UCI one. I don't know the reasons, but they didn't changed the protocol code and took only a interface layer.
However, the copyrights of Fruit 2.1 are owned by the FSF now.
Fruit 2.2/2.3 was never GPL based and Ryan has the copyright of the code.
Fruit reloaded is a private project so far and the code base is more or less Fruit 2.2
The requirement by Fabien, to use this code for Fruit reloaded, was that it will be released under GPL if a public release comes.
Some people asked for a public release already and i can promise there will be a public version this year!
Regards
Daniel

Re: GNU Chess 6.2 and Fruit Reloaded
Hi Daniel,
have many thanks for your all information you gave!
To GNUchess ... test of Version 5.6 will be started soon.
I think the right decision.
And to Fruit Reloaded ...
For me important are own ideas authors give us. I am sure that you added own ideas in Fruit Reloaded. Sound is really good ... means "Open Source" and I like the name of the engine.
My problem:
In SWCR times I tested a lot of Fruit based engines (Onno, Loop - After comments I am reading engine based on Fruit -, Cyclone, Fruit itself, Grapefruit, Toga and others. Today I have in my rating list Senpai with the ideas by the original author of Fruit. Today all the listed engines are not longer available in newer versions. Most of the programs comes not with an own style. Most interesting is Cyclone with an own style (very aggressive engine and most of the other Fruit based program have the same style Fruit or Senpai have).
Years later ...
Sting SF are also tested by myself (based on SF) ... and if Fruit reloaded comes with own ideas, engine is free with open sources I have no problems with it to add the engine in my FCP Rating List.
Elo should be higher as around 2625 ...
If you like ...
Maybe you have interest to give an answere of the following question.
Is the playing style an other Fruit have?
If yes ...
Are the reasons for an other playing style the own ideas by yourself?
If yes ...
You can be sure ...
I will test it if available.
