Questions about Chiron?

Post by Robert Flesher » Fri Oct 07, 2011 7:19 pm

Is Chiron just another Ippolit clone? If not, great! Sounds like an amazing deal. However, I would rather not have my money invested in another dubious origins program. The statement on the website that made me curious, I quote, "Starting from february 2009, having lost the source code of the latest versions, it underwent a major rewrite. In November of the same year it won, with an old version, its first italian championship and won it again in 2010." It seems to me we have heard another author state this before, I am sure most of you know where I am going with this.

Robert,
As it was stated before,Vasik was attacked by a band of thieves armed to the teeth while he was carrying Rybka's source code in a paper bag and this very armed band snatched Rybka's source code and run away with it....
I mean,we must trust the guy's version of the story regards,

This was my point. However, I would like to make it clear I am not trying to attack Chiron. On the contrary, I am enthusiastic at the prospect of playing a new engine not based on the Rybka, Ippolit series. More the better!

If you are happy, Robert, keep any doubt you could have deep in your pocket because just to mention these things is hurtful for those that are trying to produce something.
We have reached a point where the sheer fact to say you have an engine gets for you a shower of suspicions. Or comments double-edged.
Anyone doubting of an engine should keep some reserve until the moment when, carrying a private investigation, discover something if there is something to discover. If he does not investigate, a fortiori he must remain silent.
too many bad blood lastly here regards

I believe you are right, and because I used the word CLONE I now regret the possible implications of doing so. If you can change it, do so, as I cannot after 15 min. However, I was looking for a direct answer from a team member or the author. To ask a question should not be not damaging? If the author says NO, then I am happy with that, and I intend to purchase the engine. As I stated am not interested in another Rybka like engine, I already have Crafty, Fruit, and Rybka.

An answer of Ubaldo would be nice since the new Chiron is, let's say similar to the Ippo family in some areas.

Best,
Alex

I have seen parts of the source

Chiron did not win the Italian Championship in 2010. I have a trophy here on my desk proving that. He was the highest finishing Italian entry[*], which is something quite different in an open tournament :)

At the start of the tournament, the author had some problems running his engine on the provided hardware. I lent him my laptop, which had a compiler and development environment on it so he could remedy the problem. Because it also had my source code, I sat next to him while he used it to compile Chiron. I did not see anything suspicious.

This doesn't prove much pro or contra for current versions of Chiron, but as far as likelihood of being a derivative work goes, I'd say its lower for Chiron than for random other programs. The author seems to have written at least one program by himself.

[*] Deep Sjeng elected to play for Belgium, as it traditionally has.

What areas? Has this been discussed somewhere?

I had to do a double take and look again to be sure of the horseshit I just read. You guys don't deserve a decent program from anyone.
