I believe it's been playing as "Almere" on fics. It is decent strength - Arasan has won some, lost some against it.

That is correct, it is handle "Almere" on fics. Also in HGM's monthly blitz tournaments it is still with that name. It also participated in the previous edition of ChessWar with "Almere" (it's a place in Netherlands where I live).
It was started in the second half of 2008 and has been worked on almost every spare minute since.
I admit that when one doesn't know about the name change it appearred to pop out of the blue.
