I have released the CT800 firmware V1.01.
This one has taken part in category A of the 2016 D-A-CH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland - plus Netherlands) dedicated chess computer tournament, an "inofficial" tournament held by enthusiasts. It was eight rounds Swiss system with 30 minutes per side and game.
The CT800 placed 7th out of 10. Against an average opponent ELO of 2305, it scored 3.5/8 points, which is a tournament performance of 2260, way more than what I had expected. For reference, the Mephisto London 68030 is rated at ELO 2239.
The CT800 went with maximum overclock (240 MHz instead of specified 168 MHz) without any issues. It was the only machine not to need wall power - the 4xAA batteries easily lasted for the whole tournament.
My CT800 is not the only of its kind anymore; one participant has built up his own CT800 as per the project documentation (though this one did not participate in the tournament). The two machines looked quite nice side by side.
Known deficiencies of V1.01 to be fixed with the next SW version:
- too quick time management. At around move 40, the CT800 had been using less than 10 minutes. Target should be around 65%. As a result, the CT800 had plenty of time - in lost endgames.
- some opening book holes. Will be patched. The development snapshot now is at 19,000 unique plies in 10,000 unique positions - everything entered manually and checked with a desktop chess program.
