Nemeton 1 release

Post by Stan Arts » Tue Nov 18, 2014 1:38 pm

May I introduce my 4th chess program: Nemeton.

A nemeton is a quiet Celtic place with (search)trees. But in Dutch also sounds like "nemen Ton!"; Ton should probably grab the material.

No reason to write another one other than that apparently I can't stop computerchess.

A very young, undeveloped and weak beancounter which no doubt is completely uninteresting.
Releasing it in light of participating at the CSVN PT47 tournament.

Nemeton is written in Pascal. Open source. It's an extremely simple program. Pretty weird too, I enjoy reinventing the wheel.
It has a 16x12.5ish mailbox array board. No piecelists, pretty fast regardless.
Extremely small memory footprint etc.

Beginning of the year after finding a nice chesscomputer for 3 euro's at a second hand store my interest returned. Started writing a chessprogram for the Commodore64 and a PC version alongside to get my logic right but my new datastructures proved a bit nicer and faster than my last and the result you see here.

The idea so far has just been to write bug free code. Lack of time means there's little evaluation etc. but some bare bones stuff. Works kinda nicely for what it is though and has some potential to improve if I ever feel like it. (or not.) Atleast it's already a fair bit stronger than Neurosis.

Nemeton understands just enough Winboard protocol to be able to play games as such with game in x and incremental timecontrols, but does not poll input while thinking so as engine does not ponder or analyse etc. yet.

Not yet.
Though nothing too crazy will happen but leave a lot of time on it's clock at timecontrol.
