Arasan 17.2

Post by jdart » Fri May 30, 2014 2:34 am

Arasan 17.2 is available from http://www.arasanchess.org.

Changes in Arasan 17.2:

1) Fix "st" command in Winboard protocol to interpret time as seconds.
2) Scoring changes: king safety, king cover, weak pawns.

The king safety changes are significant (there was a bug in the 17.1 scoring code). Also this version has quite a few changes to the opening book.

Thank you Jon.
I have been following Arasan progress and it has been enormous in this year.
I would not be much mistaken If I consider it somewhere between the 6 best engines to date.
What do you think?

There are a lot of engines now and Arasan is not actually very near the top, even among free engines. It plays a decent game though and is certainly a challenging opponent for human players.

It continues to be very popular, with a lot of downloads. Most users just use the integrated UI and don't bother with anything else.

"Decent game" is somewhat too modest, Jon.
Well, that is one of the reasons that Arasan, though popular as you say, does not appears too much when people discuss about engines.
You are a low profile kind of guy and that is a problem in life, you know, thing that I have experimented myself along my full life.
Some good department of self promotion is esential :-)
I know Arasan play a very strong game.
If it was just decent i could defeat it... :-)

I completely agree. I think Arasan is extremely underrated. I've been using the latest Stockfish development version (270514) Rockwood with very good hardware on ICC versus Jon's Arasan's account (ArasanX) and by no means is a match easy. I've found due to this release, Stockfish winning is difficult. Very good work with Arasan. It is very strong - and a very formidable opponent for even the best engines.

By the way, I am using a top-notch opening book, the 1337 PRO version 7 which means very finely tuned positions. Whatever you did with your improvements to Arasan's opening book Jon, good job. Stockfish goes into the middlegame with little to no advantage which is quite different than before.

Cheers!
