Continuation of Critter would be very appreciated

Post by Mike S. » Wed May 15, 2013 4:58 pm

Is Critter discontinued?! I regularly check http://www.vlasak.biz/critter/ but for almost a year, no update. I consider this engine to be among the very top, with very good features like session file (= permanent learning), and Gaviota access. Great strong engine.
Regards, Mike

Or Richard can get involved with SF development. A strong developer like Richard could help Marco and Joona with improvement's. I'm just saying if Critter is no more then why not help with SF? He is probably very busy with his day job but if he could scrap some time for SF it would help a lot.

Just a thought.

One year without updates is not necessarily much in the chess engine world. The situation is much worse with Ivanhoe, which seems to have been abandoned completely.

Maybe Richard Vida has other things to do (like, you know, make a living) or is no longer interested in trying to make Critter the strongest chess engine in the world.

Plus, consider the fact that Critter is free, meaning his developer doesn't make a buck out of it. Spending a lot of time on something that doesn't yield any profit might not be Vida's top priority, and who could blame him?

IIRC, Richard warned last year he will work way less on Critter because his work take a lot of time.

Robbodini !
For sure that's the point.
Mr.Richard Vida isn't interested in a new release being credited with a 100% Houdinello the 3-rd clone (aka Robbolito). The know-how costs !
The computer chess life after Fruit is soooooooooo .......o boring.
Maybe an IVANhoe implemented directly in the human brain (or something supposed to be ) will be a nice affair. A masses affair - 0,02 $ per update. Mr. Roberto Pescatore & co. will be soon a new Bill in Forbes lists !

That's why I created a GitHub for those willing to contribute to its next version: https://github.com/Censor/Ivanhoe. It should be possible (a permission was given) to publish new compiles at http://ivanhoe.wikispaces.com/.

I think you may be right (Robbodini is the point) maybe the threat of legal action put a stop to any more copying of Houdinini.

Too many fronts and none without starting.

You become owner of Ivanhoe.

With Angels77?

You do not know where it has gone, luck, Dmitri.

I feel like I played a forced move. Fire and Ivanhoe are close relatives anyhow, so these two fronts are not on the opposite ends of the globe. I felt uncertainty about the stronger Ivanhoe compiles: Are they still "open-source"? Now I see that I can make a comparable compile. Having done that, it's natural to make the code available on GitHub for those who might want to contribute to the project. GitHub is a known good platform for open-source development, so maybe something good will come out of this initiative. Nothing bad has happened so far.
