gnuchess 5.07.173b

Post by Michel » Mon Sep 19, 2011 12:32 pm

I posted gnuchess 5.07.173b at the usual place

http://alpha.uhasselt.be/Research/Algeb ... s-release/

There are linux, windows and android binaries.

Note that this is a further development of the old gnuchess 5 branch. This is different from the
gnuchess 6 branch which is a rebranded fruit.

The latest released version of my gnuchess 5 branch was 5.07.153b.
This version adds FRC support as well as some ELO.

Note that Arena uses an outdated protocol for FRC under UCI. I made no effort to support this.
On Arena you can use gnuchess in xboard mode if you want to play FRC games.

To compile gnuchess with Gaviota Table Bases support you need libgtb which comes with the GTB distribution.

Oops. I was confused. The version you mention is indeed the latest released
one. Not 5.07.153b.

As to strength increase... The main reason for this release is the FRC support. But since you ask: in 1+1 games (without table bases) against a variety of opponents I measured a gain of about 30 elo against 170.5b.

Thank you, Michel. I have started testing it at 40/4 time control. Hopefully Ray Banks will test it for the FRC list.

Hmmmm...

Is Fabien actively involved in coding GnuChess 6, or is it just an adaptation by other authors ?

Fabien is not actively involved in GnuChess 6 but he donated the copyright for Fruit 2.1 to the Free Software Foundation. So everything is both legally and morally correct.

GnuChess 6 (which is the official FSF GnuChess) was mainly created by Antonio Ceballos. It uses an embedded Polyglot to connect the Fruit code to the standard GnuChess interface.

To test the Android binary, I ran a one-second-per-move, 32MB hash tournament on a Nexus S, using the Silver Opening Suite, with Gaviota tablebases on the SD card. Below are the results. Although the latest release was mainly for FRC support, it also seems slightly stronger.

Code: Select all

GNU Chess 1 2 3
1 5.07.173b-libgtb-32 * 52.5-47.5 57.0-43.0 109.5/200
2 5.07.170.7b-libgtb-32 47.5-52.5 * 55.5-44.5 103.0/200
3 5.07.153.3b-32 43.0-57.0 44.5-55.5 * 87.5/200
