I implemented 'gating' as away to introduce new pieces on the board (as an alternative to Bughouse-style drop moves) in Fairy-Max, which made it possible to configure it for Seirawan Chess. WinBoard nowsupports that too: it ison the New Variant menu, and to enter a gating move as user you first select thepiece you want to introduce from your holdings, and then make the normal move on the board. (With drag-drop you will already see the gated piece on the from square while you drag; click-click movesworktoo, but there you only seeit after the move has been irrevokably completed.)

The Fairy-Max in the WinBoard beta test package supports this:
