Eelco de Groot wrote:From a column in Chesscafé about the novelty of the year which was awarded to the game L. Domingues Perez - A. Morozevich from Wijk aan Zee. Any engines out there that stick to the best move? Apparently it has to be found on positonal grounds only, Stockfish 1.6.3s likes 13. gxf6 too and only very deeply calculating decides that there is probably no more than a total draw in that. Then it finds 13. Na4 again after about 20 hours. I suppose gxf6 is not so bad at some point it also gets a good score.

It is probably not so easy to say what you should evaluate better to just play Na4, I have no idea myself because the variations after gxf6 at one point became very different from each other, I have not seen many common traits there.

Gaviota plays Na4 and sticks to it after 9.6s, with a smiley. The score is really nice (+1.37)

Re: The Most Important Novelty of Informant 105, testpositio

Post by Eelco de Groot »

Thanks for all the feedback guys! John, just because this version of Iggorit exists does that make it legitimate  Standards, my friends, we need standards.
It is of course not a new novelty, but that is because it was awarded a prize by the readers of Informant for one of the most influential novelties in the last issue. So I thought it might be a good idea to give it some computer analysis. I see that most computers agree with Na4, thanks Harun! Crafty is the noticeable exception here. Crafty knows a lot about pawns so I would not dismiss its opinion here lightly. Shredder 12 does not like gxf6 so much. It still might be that with deeper searching 13. gxf6 is found playable as well by some engines. In fact I tried to apply a correction so that 13. gxf6 would get less points but that seemed to have an opposite effect. I increased the penalty for a doubled isolated pawn that ensues if White takes on c3 after 13. gxf6. But now it seems less playable for Black for a strange reason. Maybe because White decides to use the marginal pawn on c3 for a crowbar, trying to exchange it on c5 or d6. If he can get away with that he could be building some sort of attack. Anyway that was my explanation. Looking at the position that can arise after

Thanks Miguel! That is really looking good for Gaviota. Is the novelty that good !? Well you are the better player here probably unless Slavik is an anonymous GM, do you think, or does Gaviota think, that 13. gxf6 is inferior?

John, just because this version of Iggorit exists does that make it legitimate Standards, my friends, we need standards.
true, but i also need a diversion until rybka 4 is released. which i will very happily pay money for, provided it's a quality product. :D

i don't really feel for vas in this situation as should igorrit be stronger than rybka, he can release rybka 4 at any moment of his choosing & make the whole thing moot.

Just wanted to add that I should have waited a bit longer. There were no hash contents anymore so it was more difficult to find but a little bit later I got:

[D]2rqkb1r/5p1p/B2pbp2/4p3/2n1P3/1NPQBP2/P1P4P/2KR3R b k -

Engine: Stockfish 1.6.3s(dc) Build 025 (Athlon 2009 MHz, 128 MB)

19.Ba6 Rc6 (3.762.176.432) 528

The conclusion seems to be for Stockfish that both sides can't afford to attack and have to protect their Kings, i.e strengthen the bases of the pawn chains that form their pawn shelter. (a2 is a pawn chain of one :) )It is very interesting but I wish that did not take 118 minutes :) Both King moves Ke7 and Kb1 are quiet moves that is one part of the problem.

I think my Rybka 2.3.2a in this position just gives lower scores to the attacking possibilities on both sides:
