BigLion and burn out

Post by Matthias Gemuh » Fri Jul 17, 2009 5:43 pm

I tried to work on my aging chess engine BigLion today and was shocked.
Why ? alarmingly little motivation  !
I have to wait till motivation "comes back".

Meanwhile, the engine should be thrown out of tournaments, if deemed too old.

Relaxing,
Matthias.
My engine was quite strong till I added knowledge to it.

Rubbish.

Did you have a bad day.....?

Let me tell you I had a worse one. But.......

We all have a "Concerto For a Rainy Day".

Think again......

I think that burn out is the biggest problem for computer chess programmers. I guess that 75% eventually succumb to it.

Even authors of the strongest engines fall to it:

Bruce Moreland
Alexander Naumov
Anthony Cozzie
Marty Hirsch
Richard Lang
Chrilly Donninger
Jean-Christophe Weill
Ernst Heinz
Dan Wulf
Sylvain Renard
Ed Schroder
James Robertson
etc.

So you are in good company. The people who get sick and tired of it are the norm. Those who stick to it are as rare as hen's teeth.

For quite some time, I shall just watch my engines play and lose against equal or weaker engines.

Maybe the impulse would then be to fix things somehow.

Just a therapeutical thought,
Matthias.

Hi Matthias,

you've done a fantastic job developing ChessGUI, so I can well understand that you need a break.
You should only do what you want to do or enjoy doing. Once something becomes a chore, there's no point to it.

Cheers,
Graham.

That is the key issue :D .
My current passion is playing infinite swiss with 1000 engines in ChessGUI.
