Vektor 3 Chess

Post by Norbert Raimund Leisner » Sun Jan 04, 2009 4:41 pm

Hello,

can anybody of you tell me if Vektor 3 Chess
URL http://www.schubert-it.com/vektor 3
supports the following things:

-- interface for WinBoard /UCI/ChessBase
-- Autoplayer 232
-- playing on internet chess server like FICS

Is Vektor 3 a "native " engine with own GUI or it is possible to embed it
into another Macintosh chess GUI like Shredder 3 for Mac?

Best regards,
Norbert

Perhaps Kenny Dail, Steven Edwards or Tord Romstad could help him out? I know they all have Mac notebooks...

I think it's a hamburger (Big Mac) or another version or clone if you will of "Fruit"! (Apple aka "Macintosh")

Haven't used Vektor Chess in a while, but what I recall (and the website seems to confirm this) is that it is a stand-alone chess application. It is an engine with its own (very nice) GUI. I don't think the engine can be installed in other GUI's, and I don't think the Vektor GUI supports xboard or uci engines.

I suppose you could try to contact the programmer at info@schubert-it.com

As far as I know, it supports none of the above. There is no Mac OS X GUI which supports all of the three items. For UCI support, your options are Shredder (commercial), Sigma Chess (commercial), Glaurung (free), XBoard+polyglot (free, but requires X11) and Jose (free, but with an ugly cross-platform Java GUI). For XBoard engine support, you can choose between XBoard and Jose. I am not aware of any interfaces besides XBoard with internet chess server support, but I am sure they exist.

Vecktor is several years old and not too strong. It is embedded in it's own GUI which I've always felt was the nicest looking GUI I've used. It will work with the ExaChess GUI as well. The new ExaChess 4 is in beta and has very basic UCI support, you may want to try out the beta and give the author feedback.

If you want to run engine matches, Xboard is the way to go currently. It's quite easy to script, and will let you run matches using multiple computers. If you need help getting that set up, do let me know.

Here's a game from my archives:
