How does Leela scale to ram?

Post by h1a8 »

I have a rtx2080ti with 16gb of ram.
I want to play long time controls engine matches.
Was thinking about getting more ram (either 32gb or 64gb).

Does more ram (64gb or 32gb vs 16gb) significantly increases chess strength (elo) in Leela? If so then how much elo gain can be expected going from 16gb to 32gb and 16gb to 64gb?

Time control is at minimum 30s a move.

I would recommend a minimum of 128 GB.

{EDIT} I missed the final sentence about 30 sec per move. I thought "long time controls" meant something much larger.

Bear in mind that in an engine match both engines need RAM, not just Lc0. More RAM is always a good thing.

Large RAM is only needed when you run very slow TC games (hours per move). Otherwise it doesn't make a difference.

Leele satisfies with a slow RAM - what is effective the page file sys - so if set for your PC a big page file sys on your HDD even it will be appropriate for Leela. If you have an SSD for system drive it is better in some measure but there is no big difference.
Note
For page file sys an alone drive of HDD or of SDD also good. I use for page file sys those SDD what contains the syzygy databese also. The measure of page file sys may be 1-200 GB.

But will setting a big page file sys make Leela destroy your hard drive?

I always do this but my hard drive is healthy.
If you use SDD what is appropriate for system drive it will be more sure.

So let me get this straight.
Giving Leela 64gb ram makes her significantly stronger in chess engine matches than giving her 16gb of ram with time control
30s a move?

What's the role of the RAM integrated in the GPU card? Does its size matter too?

No, with 30s per move there is no difference.
