Ah yes, I was talking about how moves like a4/b4/c4 weren't found by the engine and the human had to make them manually, and they were the fastest mates, on the other thread. Glad to see this remains true in faster hardware :)

a4 get pruned

Even with 20 options and slow hardware I get no a4 as one of the best 20 options.

Note that from experience another type of moves that stockfish sometimes does not find is king moves when the king need to get closer to the opponent king for fastest mate.

a4's win is outside its horizon and it doesn't have a reason to extending it because the other moves lead to mate.

a4 is not the best move, nobody says fastest mates are the best moves, and it could be argued that slowest mates are more fun to play against someone that refuses to resign (specially if those slower mates can be played faster)

I think this proves my original complaint against the challenge, and Stockfish works as it's supposed to (making changes that allow it to find a4 wouldn't have any positive effect on its strength. All mates are equally good.)

I do not agree and I do not think all mates are equally good.
Here is another example
Stockfish needed a lot of time to find e4 and not e3 and could not see it at depth<95(I used 1024 mbytes hash and 3 cores)
Note that chest with a single core was faster in seeing e4 is the only move that force mate in 8.

Re: 1.g4 opening is losing?

Post by Ovyron »

If it mattered then it'd be reflected on the score sheet, but the winning player gets 1 point no matter how many moves they took to mate, so at that point the game has been decided and it doesn't matter how you win it.

It may be interesting to create a chess variant where you get more points if you mate in fewer moves, in that one finding minimal mates would make sense. In chess it's extravagant.

Is that conclusive or could there be some mate in 26 still hanging around?

There could be a mate in 26 I suppose. It's not impossible, just unlikely.
